    Preparation for SP2? (XP-SP1)

Sorry I'm so late to the 'Install SP2' party! I want to install SP2, but when it first came out all I seemed to see were dire warnings. Like--before you install SP2, first do X and Y... to protect your data/programs. And after you install, do A and B...to insure compatibility. (Ex: I saw a separate "update" for WordPerfect) Is there a place where all the pre- and post- cautions are listed, along w/ compatibility issues?

Also, is the SP2 of today, more stable (revised) than the initial one? If so, maybe the cautons I saw at first is irrelevant?

For many Loungers, upgrading to Windows XP SP2 has been painless. As with all major updates of your system, you may want to make a backup of essential data before installing. Windows Update itself will create a restore point so that you can roll back the update if necessary.

Security is tighter in SP2; software related to security (such as your anti-virus software) may need to be updated - visit the manufacturer's website to see if there is an SP2-related update.

First, check this at the MS site: Windows XP Service Pack 2. Lots to read from the folks bringing you SP-2. Second, the SP-2 you download today is the same as when it was released. After you install you should still run Windows Update for any fixes since the release. Backing up your data at a minimum is only sensible before starting such a substantial upgrade.

Thanks much--it included links to manufacturers and devices for driver updates, plus, apparently without dowloading an update BEFOREHAND, I coudn't have used Windows System Restore, even after (if necessary) uninstalling SP2.

    Re: Preparation for SP2? (XP-SP1)

Hmm. Problems. I have a Compaq and, contrary to the following error message, I do meet the requirements:
The update called for by HP (Compaq) is called
Microsoft QFE Update (835409) and upon installation, reported:
This is only to be used on HP Consumer PCs preinstalled with Windows XP.
Your PC does not meet this requirement, so update is being aborted...

My LAN and/or proxy settings seemed to be screwed up after SP2 installation. I had no Internet access. Since my phone is tied to the Internet, I didn't waste time--and did System Restore.

Did you turn OFF the Firewall that gets installed by default?
That is why you may not have had internet access. But you needed to install a GOOD firewall that you can control.

I did not install the XP SP 2 firewall. I kept Norton's going. You don't think Microsoft was (gasp!) limiting my options to their product, do you?

Yes, I think you did - as Dave says, SP2 installed it by default. You can certainly turn it off but you don't have much choice as far as the installation goes.

I don't think so (I may be wrong). It looked like Norton intervened and gave me an either-or option. Either way, I don't understand the problem with my LAN settings.

The firewall could have been protecting you by blocking the access to the LAN.

And NO, Norton's did NOT give you a choice, SP2 install turns it on, and have you updated Norton's to be SP2 compliant?

    Re: Preparation for SP2? (XP-SP1)

As I understand it , Norton, whose firewall was in place, intervened and asked me if I wanted another firewall to take its place. I said HELL NO (that was not a button, but I did say it) and chose Norton.

    Re: Preparation for SP2? (XP-SP1)

I believe Tal is correct. I installed SP-2 about a week ago, and as part of the installation was asked (by, if I remember right, a Norton dialog) if I wanted to keep using the Norton firewall and not activate the Windows firewall. I'm using NPF 2003 and had installed all available updates.

A little while back the word was that if you wanted to avoid yellow lights in the new XP Security Center you'd need to upgrade NPF 2003 to 2004 or 2005, but that hasn't been true for me, so I'm guessing there may have been some recent NPF 2003 updates and maybe the dialog both Tal and I encountered during the SP-2 install was also part of a recent Norton update. (As a side note, I had disabled both NPF and NAV before starting the SP-2 installation.)

You guys seem to be confusing usage vs. installation. With SP-2, the Windows Firewall will be installed. If you already have a firewall installed that will communicate properly with the new Security Center you'll have the opportunity to use your current firewall. However, you should still check the Windows Firewall status to make sure that you only have one firewall enabled.
