Acrobat 5: Clearing recently used files list

In Acrobat 5, is there a means to clear the recently used files list?
As a last resort, I guess that I could find the list in the registry and
hack the registry, but I'd rather do this the right way.

There's no need to "hack" the registry. You can just use a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> tool like MRU-Blaster to search for and remove the appropriate entries. Adobe's entries are a bit cryptic in the registry too - hard to locate by filename for instance. Adobe is also one of those applications that tends to "splutter" when loading if it can't find a MRU file on a removable medium, for example. Some archivers behave similarly. This software is good because it finds lots of 'em, that most registry tools and ad/spyware tools don't find.

Acrobat hiccoughs whem it cannot find a file on non-removable media as well.

I'll try to find the key in the registry.

If you really want to go the registry way, I'd suggest a search for "cRecentFiles". There you'll find keys named c1 -> c8 (on my setup anyway). Instead of filenames, you'll see hex values; but if you right-click and select Modify, you'll see the ASCII filenames there.

Re: Acrobat 5: Clearing recently used files list

Thanx, that must be the secret location.

    I had found [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerComDlg32OpenSaveMRUpdf].

I deletedf all those keys, but the list persisted.
I then created a new PDF.
The new files was added to the list, but the list at the key had only 1 entry for the most recent file.
Seems rather inconsistent, or rather not robust, as it should fix up after a registry hack just to protect itself from critters like me.

I just found the cREcentFiles key.

I'll delete it and see what happens.

    Ayup, that deletes the critters.

I saw a posting at the Adobe forums that indicated tat there is a setting in Preference to control the length of the list.
Perphaps that is in Acrobat 6, I have 5 and cannot find the Preference item. Although it ight apply to only Acrobat Reader, which I do not have separately installed.

"Reader Preferences>General>Misc.>Maximum Documents in Recently Used list. Set to 1 which is the lowest setting allowed. "

I think that key appears twice (Win98) as machine and user entries. Maybe that's why it persisted, only deleting one of them?

I also have v5.0 Reader only, and can't see such a preference at the UI. But it may well be a registry setting - I seem to remember reading something about that too.

Re: Acrobat 5: Clearing recently used files list

The key might indeed appear twice, but if one deletes the correct one, the other also gets deleted.
I only found one and deleted the critter.

I do not have Reader, I have full Acrobat.
So, the the Preference might be only in Acrobat 6, or it might be Mac only as the comment was about Acrobat on the Mac.
I won;t be gettint Acrobat 6. Acrobat 7 is due out 20 DEc 2004, so if I get any, that's what I'd get.

I never did install Reader 6 because there were cautions about installing Reader 6 with a full Acrobat 5.

If Reader 6 will install on Win 95, I could try that.
