Kill auto bullets & numbering (Office 2003 SP1)

I find the automated bullets and numbering formating in MSWord and Outlook infuriating. For Word, when creating my version of normal.dot, I highlighted the whole document and formatted it for no bullets or numbering. That helped; but, I still sometimes get unwanted "help" from Word. Outlook is hopeless. Automated bullets and numbering are there whether I want them or not. Is there any way to drive a stake through this beast's heart and kill it? I'd like to be able to call it up WHEN IT SUITS ME and otherwise have it out of my hair. Has anybody found the magic formula?

Select Tools | AutoCorrect Options... in Word.
    Activate the AutoCorrect tab.
Clear all check boxes for options you dislike.
Activate the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
Clear all check boxes for options you dislike, then click OK.

Thanks, Hans. That did the trick!
