In Word, Tools>Options>File Locations Tab and check to see where the AutoRecover files are stored. You should be able to navigate to that location in Windows Explorer and delete the files if they are no longer required.

Word opens with 'recovered' doc (Word 2000 SP3)

Every time I open Word it opens with a Recovered doc. I have saved these recovered docs and I have closed without saving them and it still always opens with them.
What do I need to do to get Word to stop opening with these recovered docs.

I spoke too soon. The problem is not solved. Following the same principle that you suggested I did a search for all occurrences of the recovered document and deleted them all.
Still the problem occurs. My computer is networked and I suspect that the recovered document is also stored somewhere on the network and that they System Administrator will have to get involved, unless you know some way to block it.

Go to your "Default" folder which may be your "My Documents" folder or a folder on the network and see if there are ANY files with a "~" in the front of the name. If so delete them and any other "Temp" files.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
