    Office 97 & Win2000 Compatibility (Office 97 Pro)

    I currently use Office 97 Pro with Win 98. This version of Windows is causing me several problems with such things as installing modems for broadband,. So I suppose it's time I upgraded a bit and purchased Win2000. Can anyone please tell me if Office 97 Pro will still work okay with the new operating system?

    Yes, it will, by and large. By the way, why not move to Windows XP?

    Re: Office 97 & Win2000 Compatibility (Office 97 P

    I'm with Han's cautious endorsement rather than Howard's enthusiastic thumbs up.

    I ran XL 97 on Win 2000 for many months with no problems but once I made use of a particular line of VBA code (application.filesearch) things went wrong. I'm not alone, I found <post#=187797>post 187797</post#> (dated 2002) while looking into the problem but no fix. I think this particular problem stems form the fact XL97 predates the particular version of NTFS used by Win2000.

    The problem in post 187797 has nothing to do with the OS.
    Out of context, it is invalid code.

    If you would post the whole sub in that other thread, then maybe somebody could spot the problem.

    Re: Office 97 & Win2000 Compatibility (Office 97 P

    Take the example listed in the XL97 help file for .filename
    <pre>Set fs = Application.FileSearch
    With fs
    .LookIn = "C:My Documents"
    .FileName = "cmd*"
    If .Execute > 0 Then
    MsgBox "There were " & .FoundFiles.Count & _
    " file(s) found."
    For i = 1 To .FoundFiles.Count
    MsgBox .FoundFiles(i)
    Next i
    Else
    MsgBox "There were no files found."
    End If
    End With</pre>

    My experience with this exact code in XL97 on Win2K is that if there is a file that matches the criteria (cmd*) then the code geneates no error but in *all* other cases the error given in post 187797 (Run-Time Error #5: Invalid Procedure or Argument) appears.

    Re: Office 97 & Win2000 Compatibility (Office 97 P

    I'll have to boot to my Office 97 systen to test it out, but the code below works correctly in Excel 2003:
    <pre> Dim fs As FileSearch
    Dim i As Long
    Set fs = Application.FileSearch
    With fs
    ' .LookIn = "C:My Documents"
    .LookIn = "I:HKSharedMy Documents"
    .Filename = "cmd*"
    If .Execute > 0 Then
    MsgBox "There were " & .FoundFiles.Count & _
    " file(s) found."
    For i = 1 To .FoundFiles.Count
    MsgBox .FoundFiles(i)
    Next i
    Else
    MsgBox "There were no files found."
    End If
    End With
    </pre>

    Re: Office 97 & Win2000 Compatibility (Office 97 P

    I booted to my Office 97 system.
    Created a new Excel 97 workbook.
    Imported the previously saved module.
    Renamed te one file that started with cmd to Notcmd.
    Ran the code.
    No errors.

    Then we agree to disagree.

    I had no problems with this type of construct using XL 97 on NT4 but using XL 97 on top of Win 2000 gives Run-Time Error #5: etc.

    Hi Ken

    There is a problem listed in the MS knowledge base about using Filesearch with Office 97 on Windows 2000

    OFF97: Microsoft Office 97 Programs FileSearch Fails on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based Computer

    Thanks Tony,

    I missed this in my thrashing around in the MS knowledge base.

    I also use win 2000, so that's not the issue.

    I only ran the code once, maybe the error would occur if I ran twice?
    II'll try again.

    Actually, what I should have said is, unless there is a special need. noboby should use anything earlier than Office 2000, especially if one needs to use VBA.
