Where have all the Macros gone?

I had several macros stored in normal.dot and some in another template. The documents and templates were both stored on our server. My PC was swapped out and Word was completely reinstalled. I thought that by saving the templates and documents I would be saving the macros. No way. Both the macros "stored" in normal.dot and those in the other template are gone. Along with my custom toolbar buttons and Auto Text that was supposed to be stored in the macros. Styles have survived.

What happened and what can I do to prevent this from happening again?

Thanks

Jul,

It sounds like, when Word was reinstalled, you got a brand-new Normal.dot along with it - that's why all of your customizations are gone.

If you did save your old Normal.dot onto a server, if you can locate it now, you should be able to restore most of your customizations - the best approach would be to use the Organizer to bring the macros and autotext from your old Normal.dot, into your new Normal.dot.

In the case of custom toolbar buttons, if these were located on the standard toolbars, and not on custom toolbars, then you will need to recreate them.

Storing your customizations in Normal.dot is a double-edged sword - it's certainly the most convenient way, and Word nudges you in that direction by making it the default. The downside is that Normal.dot is very vulnerable to corruption, or being replaced for a variety of reasons.

So if you are going to keep your customizations on Normal.dot, make sure you make frequent backups.

To prevent it from happening again . . .

1) Backup. See What files do I need to backup?.

2) Keep your customizations outside of Normal.dot. See: Template Basics (addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm) for more on templates (user and workgroup), document templates, global templates and Normal.dot. This also includes how the files are organized under File New and the location of template folders which varies not only by version of Word but also by operating system.

3) Have specialized templates for specialized jobs; let those templates hold the customizations for those jobs. See
How to Create a Template], an excellent tutorial on the way to create a template that will not corrupt easily and that has a numbering structure tied to styles. If you download the Word version, it comes with a template built to these specifications for a manual or book.

4) See #1. I feel your pain. BTDT

Thanksx10 for all the info leads.

I did get my Normal.dot restored and, along with it, buttons, macros, autotext, etc. Also got the buttons for "TheOther.dot". Tried the same process with TheOther.dot, but did not pick up it's macros or autotext. Does that seem logical?

Re: Where have all the Macros gone?

Gary,
That's exactly what was done. I got much of my stuff back by Closing Word, Deleting Normal.dot, and Copying the backup into the Normal.dot folder. Had to have Word closed or I just got a generic Normal.dot.

Am studying the info I got from you and Chas very carefully.

Thanks x 10
