Skype

This "free telephone software" comes from the same stable as Kazaa, so there are suspicions that it could contain spyware, or, if it doesn't at the moment, probably could in the future.

Does anyone use Skype and/or would like to comment on it, please?

    thanks

    Re: Skype

Skype is fantastic John. I've used it to speak with friends "down under", and with friends just around the corner on a rainy night.

The quality of the voice chat is by far superior to the MSN Messenger or Yahoo Instant Messenger clients I've used previously.

I've not (yet) had a problem with Spyware as a result of installing or using Skype - and their website states it will never contain such. Skype is also available on the Windows, Linux, and I believe MAC platforms - making it available to the masses.

It's certainly worth a look John.

    Re: Skype

Given Chris's endorsement, at least you know you have someone on this side of the ocean you can test with. At 2 cents (US) per minute (our "declining" dollar!), that sounds like a pretty fair rate to me, huh? If you go, I might also. Maybe we'll get a Lounge Audio Convention going...

    Re: Skype

I've not (yet) gone the PC to telephone conversation. I've only done the PC to PC chat. However, the quality is very good.

    Re: Skype

I've just signed up for Vonage, a reasonably priced Voice-Over-IP service. In the case of this service, you supply a broadband connection (cable, in my case) and use Vonage just as you would a regular telephone. The plan costs less than a typical wired phone and gives me unlimited local and long-distance calling as well as all of the nice features (Call-waiting, Caller-ID, etc). Plus, you can carry the hardware device with you to anywhere in the world (where there's an internet connection) and use it just as you would if you were at home.

I know this isn't in the category of a ware voice chat program, but it's definitely got me excited! On a side note, I gave up my wired telephone account for wireless about 7 months ago. It's been a struggle to stay under the limit of free minutes - especially since my wife and I share plan. Now, I'll have a very affordable alternative.

I just placed the order yesterday, so I'm still waiting on the hardware to arrive. My father-in-law has used Vonage for almost a year and really loves it! I expect we will enjoy it as well.

I use Lingo now for about 6 months. Aside from having to reset the adapter preiodically, it is great. I live in Israel, have a US number, and for our friends in the US it is now a local call. Good voice quality also

Nah, sorry, I kinda forgot about it and then with the holidays and all... I guess that I'm also a little nervous about that kinda stuff as well. I think I'll keep watching from the background and see if any "press" shows up about it - good or bad.

    Re: Skype

I've been dreaming about such a solution for myself, however at the moment, the only exchanges available are in different cities (where my family live), but nothing for my city. So, if I did switch, I'd be okay for local calls, included long distance etc... but anyone within this city, would be calling long distance to get me.

I could keep the land line active for this, but I don't really want to have two phone bills. Who knows, maybe in a few months, the "Telephone City" will be included in list of exchanges available for VoIP service.

    Re: Skype

Hello there fellow Vonage user I researched the other VoIP options too and decided Vonage was the best for the money (and been around the longest which means a lot in a new technology).

We use it for my husband's small home business and it's great so far (about 7 months). We have the cheapest plan, 500 min for $15/mon which is more than we need. If I could dump my home land line with PacBell I would but it's what my DSL feeds off of and there are no alternatives where we live. I did however downgrade our land line account to their cheapest measured rate plan at $7/month (there is a cheaper plan but it's for very low income). This charges me for outgoing calls but we never use the phone for outgoing. Actually it sits on the floor under my desk since it's not used (and so I don't accidently pick it up to dial). So our total phone bill with two different companies is actually less than it was with PacBell only.

I like the activity log that Vonage gives me (via their web site) and it's easy to set up the phone # to automatically call other numbers if yours is busy (or your Internet connection is down). They have other convenience options on their system too like call forwarding/waiting, etc.

    Re: Skype

Heya guys, We've been Vonage users for a little over year. Lemme ask.. if you surfing around and talking on the phone, does your conversation get garbled? I have a pretty fast line and the person I'm talking to gets garbled when the ol' lady is surfing around...

    Re: Skype

Not at all, there's no performance hit that I can tell - I think of it as no different than adding another computer to my router (all sharing the DSL line).

    Re: Skype

The Mac and Linux versions have just come out of Beta, and now have all the features (Conference call etc.) of the XP version. Minor [bug] though - tried to register as 'Bowlie' but it said this name already exists. Once registered under another name went searching for the dude who had borrowed my handle. "User does not exist"

    Re: Skype

Now is that self-referential (or not), or Catch-22, perhaps? Or is there something of Zen Buddhism in there?
