    Making 'fake' TOC (Word 2000)

My document has headers with the page numbers in them. I want to link to the page numbers somehow to make a TOC. I tried formatting the words in the header that would be the TOC entry, but it doesn't "take". I assume it's because the TOC style has to be a paragraph, and--for my purposes--it can't be a paragraph. Also, my headers are in tables (this is a policy manual). I do have the page numbers in the headers also. Is there a way to bookmark them and then link a "PAGEREF" field in the TOC? I tried this, but all the page numbers say page 1, no matter what page they are on.

    Thanks for any help.

    Welcome!

Since a page header might be displayed on more than one page, Word would not be able to determine the page number. You will have to put the text you want at the beginning of each section of the document, preferably in a heading style. You can put a cross reference to this text in the page header of the section. The table of contents can pick up the heading style in the normal way.
