Tab in a Word Doc. (Word 2000)

I would like to know why I can't change tabs in a word document that I set when I made the document.
What I mean is, if I go back to a document that I set tabs on and want to add new tabs, the new tabs disappear when I place my cursor in a position to start typing. I have to re-set the new tab each time I want to type from that same point on the next line. I hope I am making sense.

Do you mean that you have set tabs by selecting the entire document? If so, you must select the entire document again and then change the tabs. If you select only part of the document, the changes will apply only to that part. Remember that tabs are a form of paragraph formatting and will only apply to the paragraphs that are selected.

Just to reinforce fred's reply. The best place to set tabs is in a Paragraph Style. Then they will be set correctly for every paragraph that you format with that style.

If you have not intentionally used paragraph styles then you may be able to achieve what you want in an existing document by modifying the tabs for the normal style.

Thanks Redbeard and StuartR. I didn't know I could select the hole document to change the tabs. I looked for paragraph style but only found "default Paragraph and every time I try to click on it from the style list I always get "Footer". That's not normal, is it?

Does this happen in all Word documents, or only in a particular one?

You can select the whole document by either triple clicking in the left margin or pressing Ctrl-A anywhere in the document.
