Cannot find enough free resources (Code 12) XP SP2

I'm configuring a computer for a charity that I do some work for and I can't get the modem to work. The vendor will allow me to return the whole thing for a refund, but this was a really good deal for a "slightly used customer return" and the charity can't afford a brand new PC.

Everything works except for the modem, which reports "The device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code 12)", with a <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #000000; font-weight: bold"><big>!</big></span hi> in device manager. There is no obvious conflict and everything else is working fine.

This PC arrived with Windows XP SP1a, which I upgraded to SP2 before I did anything else, I also applied all critical updates from Windows update.

Since noticing the problem I visited the vendor's web site for driver updates. (This is a Fujitsu-Siemens PC and they provide a single installation file which updates all the drivers to the latest versions).

I have attached the output from printing the Device Manager configuration (with computer name etc xxxx'd out), can anyone see what is causing the conflict?

I don't see anything in that PDF file that I'm smart enough to recognize, Stuart. What do you think would be the impact of physically removing one or more components, such as a NIC or whatever and restarting the machine to see if the problem remains the same?

    Al,

Removing components would be <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> difficult. The only PCI device on this computer is the modem - almost everything is on the motherboard.

I just found a newer driver on the web site of the modem vendor - it installed OK, changed the name of the modem, but still gives the same Code 12 error.

My next step will be to "borrow" a modem from another PC and try to get that working - if I can then I don't mind spending a few quid on a new modem and chucking the "Smart Link 56K" one that came with this PC.

    Stuart

There are several hits on TechNet, but none that appear particularly relevant.
Here's the writeup on the error code 12...

    Error Code
    12

    Display Message
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system. (Code 12)

    Recommended Resolution
Two devices have been assigned the same input/output (I/O) ports, the same interrupt, or the same Direct Memory Access channel (either by the BIOS, the operating system, or a combination of the two). This error message can also appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device (for example, if a universal serial bus (USB) controller does not get an interrupt from the BIOS because of a corrupt Multiprocessor System (MPS) table).
You can use Device Manager to determine where the conflict is and disable the conflicting device.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Later... Are there any jumpers/DIP switches/etc you can change on the modem?

Even later... I found some comments on this webpage.

    Thanks,

Having read that web site, I now understand why my solution worked. I swapped the modem with one from a different SP2 systems and both worked fine. Presumably this is equivalent to

The problem might be avoided if, prior to starting the SP2 upgrade, you physically remove and uninstall the Smartlink modem; then, after SP2 upgrade is complete, re-install the modem.

    John,

Can you tell me what search or other technique you used to find that webpage. I might learn something from this event.

I just Googled for "Smartlink modem", nothing more complicated, and it was result number 2!

Note to self - must remove dark glasses before searching in future.

Re: Cannot find enough free resources (Code 12) XP

This modem worked fine on another PC using the out-of-the-box Windows XP SP2 driver. When I installed the driver from http://www.smlink.com it stopped working, with port conflict errors (a process has this port open).

    Thankfully we have system restore.

    Stuart

One suspects that the driver was not XP-certified...
