    'From' column display (Outlook XP SP2)

    Don't know if this has been asked before but:

    How can I change the way the "From" column displays in the In-Box.

    For example, I get a message from "Kurt Greiner", someone I've never written to or heard of. I have to open this message to find out that it is from "Kurt_Greiner@ibi.com". I would rather know that BEFORE I open the message not after. How can I change this?

    Other than right-click and then Options, as suggested above, I don't think there is a convenient way to do this. Outlook does not have a handy way to display the complete information (display name PLUS address) in the From column. There is a "Reply to address" option that you can add, but most senders do not specify the Reply-To address, so this would rarely be worth the screen space. You could conceivably write a Rules Wizard rule, running a VBA procedure (in Rules Wizard speak, a "script"), to create your own custom From field, but this would be quite a bit of work, would generate security alarms (unless you use the Redemption library or other workaround, and I've found the interaction of Rules and VBA to be a bit fragile.

    Hi,
    You can change the displayed name to the actual email address by modifying the XML view of the Inbox. Something like this should do it (note: you may need to change the column index if your From field is not the fifth column):
    <pre>Sub SetSenderDisplay()
    Dim objView As View
    'Set a reference to the MSXML 2.6 type library.
    Dim objXML As New MSXML2.DOMDocument
    Dim objXMLNode As MSXML2.IXMLDOMNode
    Dim objRoot As MSXML2.IXMLDOMNode
    'Get the default "Messages" view
    Set objView = Outlook.Application.GetNamespace(Type:="MAPI") _
    .GetDefaultFolder(FolderType:=olFolderInbox).Views ("Messages")

    'Load the schema into the MSXML parser.
    objXML.loadXML bstrXML:=objView.XML
    Set objRoot = objXML.documentElement

    'Select the From column - in my case it's column 5 in the view.
    Set objXMLNode = objRoot.selectNodes(querystring:="column").Item(In dex:=5)
    'Select the prop node which is where the displayed value is set
    Set objXMLNode = objXMLNode.selectSingleNode("prop")
    'Assign required field - in this case either fromname or fromemail
    objXMLNode.Text = "urn:schemas:httpmail:fromemail"
    'Assign the document's XML to the view
    objView.XML = objXML.XML
    'Save and apply the new view.
    objView.Save
    objView.Apply

    End Sub
    </pre>

    NB: If you are on an Exchange server, this will mean that internal addresses are displayed in the format of /O=Organisation /OU=Organisational Unit /CN=Recipients /CN=Username, but then of course your IT department should be filtering out all your spam anyway... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Hope that helps.

    That's intense. Rory, is there a reference page online for the properties available using this method? (In other words, how did you find "urn:schemas:httpmail:fromemail"?)

    Hi Jefferson,
    They're listed here in the Exchange SDK. Some don't seem to work at all (based on my very limited attempts during my train journey home) so it was very much trial and error for me!
    Hope that helps.
