Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

The following sequences the problem I am having with creating shortcuts:
1. right click desktop to create new shortcut;
2. browse target folder for shortcut item;
3. select directory in which target is located;
a. selected directory's + sign goes blank search icon runs continously,
b. close browser wind
c. the window End Program-rundll32.exe no responding opens.
d. close End Program window (takes two clicks) and window goest blank and another click closes the window
4. I'm left with a "new shortcut" icon.
I've formatted and re-installed WinXP Pro/SP2 twice (using different program CDs) and the problem presists. It occurs maybe after I have re-installed some 25 percent of my programs. I have uninstalled some of the programs in case there is a conflict with no luck.

Any ideas on this fixing this problem would be appreciated as I essentially unable to create desktop icons.....

Does it work immediately after the OS is installed and before you start installing any applications? If so, then install the applications one at a time testing after each. That should identify the culprit. Could be you have something not compatible with SP-2.

Re: Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

Seems like all the drives lock up when I attempt to proceed with creating a shortcut....I installed programs for a couple days so doing a hunt and search (after two re-boots and three re-installs I think I'll wait until it really crashes before try this. Looks like it might be a conflict with SP2, but I was hoping there might be some sort of fix without another format/install. I can get shortcuts from My Computer...so maybe I'll have to live with this procedure...let me know if there are any other ideas as I have LOTS of software on the computer.......

Have you opened Windows Explorer browsed to these same folders and not had any problem finding the required "exe" file?

As to what I think Dave was getting to, have you tried opening Windows Explorer, drilling down to the file in question. Then right clicked it and select, "send to">
Desktop, create shortcut?

Re: Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

I've come to the conclusion that the problem is that I am installing WinXP Pro Corporate with Service Pack 2 FInal Multi Language & Arabic User Interface Pack and there is something in the CD which is probably causing the problem.....After four format/reinstall (I'm hard headed) I am installing WinXP Pro Corporate and adding SP2...I'll see how that goes and will add to this post if I still have a problem...Thanks for all the suggestions to date and I hope I will not have to go back to the well again.....

Re: Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

After installing WinXP Pro Corporate w/ SP2 (English) the create shortcut problem started again after installing some software. When trying to create shortcut from Windows Explorer using create EXE on Desktop this doesn't work also...but I can drag the file to the desktop and it will be created and then drag it to the folder where I want it (very time consuming). I checked the site which lists known conflicts with SP2 and I have none of this software installed....now still looking for other suggestions (or learn to live with dragging shortcuts from Explorer!!)....Thanks for all the ideas....

Have you tried it before installing SP2 to see if that is the problem?

Re: Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

Does it work immediately after installing ths OS & SP-2 and before 'installing some software'? After which software install did it then fail? BTW, XP Pro is XP Pro regardless of the method of acquisition - there is no such thing as a Corporate version of XP. There a different methods of licensing XP which may be where the Corporate part comes in.

Re: Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

No didn't try to create shortcuts before installing SP2, but it works fine for a while and then, after installing some software, it stops installing shortcuts for EXE programs (creates desktop shortcuts fo URL however)...I was mistaken in that I can create shortcuts from explorer (drag or create shortcuts as suggested earlier)..anyhow, maybe I have to live with dragging shortcuts from explorer and hope any offending software get upgraded and fixed! Thanks for the response....

You keep saying

after installing some software, it stops creating shortcuts for EXE programs.

WHAT software are you installing !!! Is it a secret ??? Are you doing covert work for the government ??? If you could tell us a bit more about the software you are installing and also take a bit more time between installations to check the system out (it's got to be less time consuming than all the reformat and reinstalls you've been doing ), it might help to isolate the problem and then you can solve it. Until you identify the cause, and it seems for all the world to be a software conflict, you'll never solve the problem.

Re: Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

Here is a list of software I think I installed before I noticed the shortcut problem:
Trillian; DUMeter; FlashGet; Internet Download Manager; LinkStash; WinAce; WinRAR; CloneCD; Ewido; Norton System Works 2005; AdAware; SpyBot; BPS Spyware Remover; Agfa Scanner; MS Office 2003; Money 2005; QuickTime...
I suspect I am going to have to live with the problem which I can work around..and wait for some software updates which might fix the problem....unless someone has a similar problem and has identified the source of the problem I suggest this can only be fixed by checking each piece of software as it is installed (maybe the cure is worse than living with the problem)...Thanks everyone for the ideas......btw, I've given up on the idea of another refotmat/reinstall...four times is enough!!!

Re: Create Shortcut Problems (WinXP Pro/SP2)

I saw these comments in an MS XP newsgorup:

From Kelly Theriot - well known MS MVP:

I have seen this behavior from having Hotbar installed or the similar. If
Hotbar was the case, it leaves behind two dll's that causes New to freeze
even after it has been uninstalled. If this is the case:

Hotbar - Explorer/New Freezes (Line 206)

From Nancy Kay (another poster):

"I had this happen when I had a drive mapped that was on my work
network and not on my actual PC. When I wasn't connected to the
network, Windows Explorer took forever before it realized it couldn't
resolve the drive mapping."
