    Insert Merge Fields (2003)

I'm finding it very tedious to insert merge fields when setting up labels for a mail merge in Word 2003. The only way I've been able to do it is to insert fields individually, clicking Close after each insert (or, in the case of adjacent fields, I insert them all, click Close and then add a space between them). I believe this is a "known problem", as per articles 826838 and 276005 in Microsoft's knowledge database. A so-called workaround is given, i.e., use the Insert Merge Field button on the Mail Merge toolbar - but, unless I' m missing something, this offers no improvement.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Wyley

The Insert Merge Field command you can add to the toolbar using Tools | Customize is a dropdown list. You can click somewhere in the document, pick a merge field from the dropdown list, click somewhere else in the document, etc. Much more convenient, since you don't have to close a dialog window.

    Re: Insert Merge Fields (2003)

Thanks, Hans. I now see how to do this. My confusion stemmed from the fact the the Mail Merge toolbar already has a button called Insert Merge Merge Fields. I assumed that customizing the toolbar in the way you suggested would simply duplicate this button. But I see that this is not the case. Thanks for your help.

    wyleyp,

Have you found a way to insert the Postal Code (Bar Code) using the methon described in this thread?

    Thanks.
