Large Documents - 2,000 plus pages (Word XP)

Hi, all. I've searched the posts for my particular problem, but didn't see it addressed. Basically, there's a large on-line document (2,000+ pages much of it in tables) that I need to have a copy of on my hard drive (yes, I do have permission).

I've tried saving it as HTML, as plain text, and copying/pasting into Word. Whenever I try to open the file (in either Word or IE), however, it just freezes up and the program stops responding.

If I copy/paste/save into individual files (which would be a lot of work), what is the size limit for the files so that I don't run into problems?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions. I appreciate any ideas you can offer.

    Brent

See Operating parameter limitations and specifications in Word. The maximum file size for a Word document is 32 MB (excluding graphics). I suspect that Word will become wobbly with documents near that limit. A document of over 2,000 pages with lots of formatting would probably be larger than 32 MB.

What format is the original file -- DOC or HTML?

Word slows down dramatically with large tables, and large numbers of tables. IE isn't a whole heck of a lot better. It might seem counterintuitive, but you could try opening it in Excel. If Excel won't open the file directly, you certainly could copy and paste HTML tables from IE into Excel. Excel loves tables. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

It may be worth trying OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org. From there you can split it into chunks and save as .doc, or even go right to PDF.

Thank you all for all the feedback. Knowing Word's limit (32MB - amazingly small considering that MS would like Word used to create everything!) <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20> helped, even though the file size appeared to be 7.9 MB, so it should have worked just fine but didn't.

I did this kind of bass ackwards, with a big thanks to Jscher for his idea. I copied large amounts of text into an Excel file, using different worksheets for the different groups of text. It's not ideal, but it worked and gets me a searchable document.

For what it's worth, the original file was one continuous webpage in HTML format. I needed that text on my hard drive and getting it there just was impossible, except for this. I haven't tried closing the file and re-opening it yet (fear), but it has saved OK. I cannot use Open Office at work (restricted network), but appreciate the suggestion. I've used it at home and kind of like it.
