    Grouping Templates (XP)

    Hi All-

I have many custom templates to utilize different sizes and styles of paper. I found in Woody's book "Using Office 2003" p.588/ Ch.21- Using Styles, Templates and Themes the procedure for adding new descriptive tabs to the New from Template dialogue box. The procedure as written works fine. (The procedure is File/Save as/choose document template, then create a new folder, which is the new tab.)

However, I'd like to move all my existing templates into the new tabs, too. Opening the template document and using "save as" and following the procedure doesn't work. Nor does using Windows Explorer and cutting/copying the template file to the new tab. This used to be easier in an earlier version of Word, since I had different tabs set up without any trouble.

Any suggestions as to how to accomplish this tidying up, other than starting each template from scratch? Thanks./ cel

    Hi Cel:
If you're talking about custom templates, you can go to Windows Explorer & create a sub folder in the templates folder for each tab you want (after awhile, though, it will say something like "More templates..."). As far as the built-in templates, you can't change the tabs they are on. They are not really in sub folders. They are controlled by registry entries & are "advertised" as being on certain tabs. You can remove those templates & tabs only by uninstalling them completely. P.S. I liked the old way better, too. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that doesn't work. While I can see the folders created from within Explorer in Explorer, when you are in Word and click new/ from Template you only see the one folder created using a totally from scratch template. Copying an old template to the viewable folder doesn't work, you only see the one scratch template. There must be something embedded in the file attributes that tells the file where to situate itself.

Anyone else run up against this one? Thanks./ cel

Check to make sure you are saving in the templates folder listed under:

Tools > Options..., File Locations tab, User Templates

There can be other templates folders created by Office, and Word might not necessarily reconcile all the different entries in the manner you expect.

Yes, that was it. There are at least two places with all my templates. It appears that I can use Explorer to move them around. Thank you so much! / cel
