    Sharing a printer problem

I cannot add a printer over my network (ICS) on the client machine.
    - Both PC's are running Win XP SP-2
    - Both can ping each other
    - Both can access shared files/folders
    - Host PC can print with the client's printer

However, when I run the "Add printer" wizard on the client, the desired printer doesn't appear in the list. The only thing that shows are the two servers; host and client on the domain. If I type in the actual name of the printer, e.g., PilgrimCanon i850 in that option, an error pops up saying that either the printer is offline or possibly the name of the printer is incorrect. Neither is the case.

Firewalls are not an issue because I shut them down so as to eliminate that possibility and checked to make sure that the XP Firewall was disabled on both, which they always have been. I've briefly looked at my "Services" on both machines thinking that perhaps a critical service was not running or disabled. Didn't see anything that might be relevant.

So, where do I go from here? hehe

I'm a little <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> . Do you mean that you cannot install the printer on the second machine OR the printer is installed and you cannot see it on the network? You also talk of Host & Client . Are the computers part of a domain or a peer to peer network?

    Re: Sharing a printer problem

Sorry for the confusion...... let me try to clarify.

Host machine has its own printer installed.
Client machine has its own printer installed.

Host and Client can both equally share files between them, connect to the Internet, ping each other, etc....

Host has successfully added the Client's printer and has no problem sending print jobs to it.

The problem is: the Client cannot add the Host's printer; it isn't recognized when the Add Printer wizard is run.

    Hope that clears things up. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Has the "Host's printer" been shared?
If not NO other computer will be able to see it until it has been set up to be shared.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Yes, the Host's printer has been setup to be "shared. In fact, the Client used to be able to use the Host's printer. I don't know what changed to bring about this problem. hehe

Have you checked the share permissions on the 'host' to ensure that the 'client' is allowed access?

Apart from ensuring that you have followed these instructions completely, I'm not sure what to suggest.

    Re: Sharing a printer problem

Well, when sharing printers I think you need the 'guest' account active. Have you followed the instructions in the link John provided?

Re: Sharing a printer problem (fixed)

    Joe,

That's what needed to be done.... the "Guest" account was turned off. When I turned it on, everything worked perfectly. <IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/forgot.gif>

    Thanks,
