    Windows 2003 Update Issue

    Hi,

I have a server running Windows Server 2003 (sorry but this seemed the most appropriate forum) which has been removed from the domain it was once in.

When in the domain it had, I assume, a policy or something applied to it that prevented it accessing Windows Update and that policy (or whatever it is

Run gpedit.msc. Check the settings under Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update and under User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update.

    Re: Windows 2003 Update Issue

In all Windows Servers (2000 and 2003 families) you can reach Windows Update ONLY though Installation Mode:

Start | Settings (only in Win2000) | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Add New Program | Windows Update

You can also download hotfixes and install them locally (from Command prompt). However, you cannot use Windows Update from Internet Explorer by design.

    Re: Windows 2003 Update Issue

<!mskb=326686>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 326686<!/mskb> (which applies to Win 98 through Win XP AND Windows Server 2000 & 2003) indicates that "This behavior may occur if the Windows Update feature has been turned off. Your system administrator may have used a Group Policy, System Policy, or registry setting to turn off this feature." The article explains how to restore this functionality.

There are also several other articles with solutions to other Windows Update problems when using Windows Server. but nowhere do I see any reference to this "installation mode" to which you refer. Could you point me towards some documentation of this feature?

    Re: Windows 2003 Update Issue

And yet in this article , the user is advised to run Windows Update from the Help & Support Center. <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> - very confusing. And to further add to the confusion, <!mskb=326686>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 326686<!/mskb> indicates that Windows Update should also be available from the Start Menu and from Internet Explorer. So it seems that there are several ways to access Windows Update.

Thanks for the reference to "installation mode" (<!mskb=186515>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 186515<!/mskb>), but would that article apply to installing Applications rather than OS updates or service packs?

    Re: Windows 2003 Update Issue

    Here it is:

    A Shorter URL

It is the same procedure as a new program installation:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...180&sd=tech

The term "Installation mode" is described in this article:

186515: Do Not Run Terminal Server in Installation Mode

Just it WORKS that way. If you have a computer running Microsoft Server next to you, just try to insert any installation CD running its Setup from Autorun: you'll get the error message pointing you to the routine described above.

    Thanks For The Replies ...

... I have had a slight issue in that I managed to total the motherboard which has only just come back from repair at Gigabyte (I have to rebuild the system yet). Plus I have had a new server delivered just to complicate things. I will reply as soon as I can.
