I know there's a long VBA you can write to make Word spellcheck locked fields in a form - is there an easier way to make it spellcheck the unlocked fields?

The longish code in How to enable the spellchecker in a protected document is meant for use in a document locked (protected) for forms, not especially for locked fields. (There shouldn't be a reason for spellchecking locked fields anyway).

Well - the guy who wants to fill out this form several times a day wants to be able to check his spelling - and all the writing he does himself is, of course, inside a text form field.

I told him maybe he should just be a little more careful when he types!

I think we're not talking about the same thing here. A form field in a protected document can be filled in by the user, unless it is locked - in that case, the user cannot modify the contents. In other words, form fields in a protected (locked) document can be locked or unlocked. Normally, spellchecking is disabled in a protected document, but the code from the MVPS site enables the user to spellcheck the form fields. However, this only makes sense for unlocked form fields - those that can be filled in.

I think we are - Mr. S has made himself a FAX form that he inserted text fields in to in the appropriate places - who it's to, the fax #, etc. and a place for comments. After he has completed the fax, he wants to check his spelling - especially in the comments section where there are usually several sentences. Locked or unlocked, spell check DOES NOT find spelling errors in the text form fields.

Does mr. S use the spellcheck macro from the Word MVP site? I just tested it on a document protected for forms. It checks the text in the form fields that can be filled in, and ignores form fields that can't be filled in. Without the macro, there is no way to spellcheck a protected document - both the toolbar button and the menu opton are grayed out.

He doesn't know what "macro" means, much less write one and use it - I don't have time to do it for him so he is S.O.L. for now and will just have to be more careful when he types.

Over time, he may find it easier to simply use ordinary table cells or even tabs to position the input on this document, rather than using form fields. At least, that's what I do. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
