    Securing an External Hard Drive

I use an external hard drive to backup to. The backups are password protected but am wondering if it is possible to protect (via password) the drive itself or the directories the backup files reside in.

I don't anticipate anything happening to the drive but just in case it sprouts legs and walks off I would feel somewhat better knowing it is harder to get to the data on the external drive.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

Re: Securing an External Hard Drive

Hi John. If you're using WinXP then just Encrypt the data on the drive- that way nobody but you would be able to access it. The easiest way to do this is Right click on the root folder(s) on your backup drive, select Properties then Advanced. In this window you should see the option to 'Encrypt contents to secure data'. That's it! You don't need to do anything else as WinXP will decrypt & encrypt on the fly. One word of warning, make sure you back of your encryption key (I'm sure there'll be a thread on here somewhere...) as this key will be lost if you ever reinstall Windows and the data won't even be accessible by you...

    Hope that helps.

If you are using XP Pro with NTFS you can encrypt the file. See the XP Pro Help for more information. Also, you can look here: How To Encrypt a File in Windows XP. There are links to additional articles at the bottom.
