Cookies and URL history seem to disappear (6.0.2800)

I'm using IE 6 under Win2K. Periodically it seems as if my cookies and browser history disappear. I suddenly have to start entering usernames and passwords for sites that knew who I was the day before, and the inline autocomplete no longer recognizes URLs I visited the other day. It doesn't seem like specific cookies or URLs have expired -- it seems like they all cease to work at once. I suppose it could be that my Temporary Internet Files cache has reached its limit (100 MB), but it's supposed to purge the oldest files when that happens. I see cookies in there that are over a year old, but the cached files contained in the folders in my Content.IE5 directory are (with only a few exceptions) less than a week old (which is when this happened most recently). The cookies folder in my Documents and Settings folder has cookies going back many years.

I did not run any cleanup utilities when this happened. I do not run automatic spyware utilities (I have them, but run them manually and haven't done so recently).

Any ideas?

Have you checked IE options>General>History and looked at : How many days to keep pages in history?
You can set this variable to any number you want.

Can you clarify how this setting works? I have it set to keep history for 45 days. What I WANT it to do is purge files that haven't been touched in 45 days. But perhaps it just trashes them all every 45 days.

Would I be better off setting it to some ridiculously high number of days and letting the Temporary Internet Files setting take effect when I exceed the storage limit (currently set to 100MB)? That setting is SUPPOSED to delete the oldest files, not clear the entire cache.

Robert,
That setting will delete EVERYTHING after the set number of days.
I suppose your TIF settings should do what you want to do.

999 is the maximum allowable value. That's better than what I have now, but still means that periodically all my cookies and history will be deleted -- not just old junk. It looks like setting that value to 0 won't save ANY history. Is that so?

I haven't used IE much in the past few months, but I think it discards the entries older than that number of days, otherwise I would have lost all my history every 10 days (my old setting). That isn't how it worked.

Something like the Norton Internet Security suite or other privacy software may be sneaking in and clearing the cache, AutoComplete, and history. Worth checking all the various settings again, I think.

That may be Jefferson but the help drop down for that setting says:
--------------------------------------
Specifies the number of days that Internet Explorer should keep track of your viewed pages in the History list.
Internet Explorer creates shortcuts to pages you viewed in this and previous browsing sessions. If you are low on disk space, you might want to decrease this number.
-----------------------------------------

I think Robert is trying to purge UNUSED items within a set number of days, not just any within a number of days?

Whatever the sertting may say I have the same experience as Jefferson. On the occasions that I do use IE, I do not find that the cookie history has been wiped out. My History setting is 20 days. Yet, I have Cookies dating back to February 2004. Does the Original Poster run something like Norton Internet Security?

Re: Cookies and URL history seem to disappear (6.0

If I visit the Temporary Internet Files folder, the display includes three dates: Last Modified, Last Accessed, Last Checked. I don't know what "Checked" really means (checked to see if there has been a change on the server??), but I suspect that if any of these dates is within the period to preserve, it will be preserved, even if it was first downloaded much earlier. As of now, I have files from 11/19/2004 at 4:01PM and later. My history setting is 10 days; my cache size limit is 124MB (actual size about 25MB). I'm not sure where the pre-11/19 content when, or why the content more than 10 days old hasn't been cleared, but... I think it's close enough.

(The cookies seem to hang around longer than the other bits; I'm ignoring the cookies for this discussion.)

I think the original poster's problem with wholesale, indiscriminate clearing of history and cookies is not a standard IE setting, but without putting hands on the computer, it's hard to say what might be doing it.

Added: It sounds as though the AutoComplete memory also might be getting cleared. This is difficult to do by accident.

I think that the History setting of the number of days is only for the shortcuts that are made to track the sites you visit. It has nothing to do with the TIF contents. The TIF contents are managed by size. Here's an explanation of IE cache behavior at: Enigmatic Software.
