Where is the autocorrect file? (MSO2003 )

I have a user that refuses to use our standard normal.dot unless his autocorrects can be transferred.
I have searched and found Jefferson's discussion for Word '97 and 2000 but when I searched for *.acl I came up with a blank.

    Can anyone help?
    cheers

    Hi Phil

When you search for *.acl files you need to make sure that you are using the option to include hidden files and folders in the search.

How to move Word AutoCorrect entries between computers in Word 2003 may also be of use.

Is he sure he means AutoCorrect and not AutoText? Only "formatted" AutoCorrect entries are stored in Normal.dot, the others, as you know, are in an .acl file, often named with a language code in the name (such as MSO1033.acl for English American Style).

You could try this for AutoText entries, I don't know if it works for formatted AutoCorrect entries: copy the user's Normal.dot to something like oldnorm.dot and drop it in the Startup folder. This should cause Word to load it as a global template. AutoText entries should be available, but I'm not sure about the AutoCorrect entries. Does that help?

    Jefferson

    Thanks for that.

I added an autocorrect to my machine, located the file Cocuments and Settings<User>Application DataMicrosoftOfficeMS 3081.acl (being form Kiwiland) copied this file to another users directory and Bingo. My concern was that if I overwrote the Normal.dot the users would lose all their autocorrects, trivial though they might be, and they come down on me like a ton of bricks. Knowing that I can overwrite the Normal.dot makes me feel much better.

There is another issue with Autotexts but I have attached those to the templates and the users cannot do anything about those.

    Thanks again.
    cheers

    Hi Jefferson:
    I tried your trick with normal.dot & oldnormal.dot with autocorrect entries in Word 2000. FWIW, loading oldnormal.dot as a global template doesn't carry over it's autocorrect entries. Nice idea, though. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
