No resources for printer

Had win2k Pro going OK with network connection to HP Officejet 635 on win98 machine. Reinstalled WIN2k and now cannot even install printer. Error messages are
Application Log:WMI ADAP was unable to load the winspool.drv performance library due to an unknown problem within the library: 0x0
System Log:The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.
When I try to install any sort of printer, I get message that there are insufficient resources and cant go any further. Reboot does not help
Appreciate any help for a real beginner on Win2k

Re: No resources for printer

When you say you re-installed Win2k, was it a clean install or did you re-install over existing OS?

The other thing that would be helpful in troubleshooting this is the additional information from the Event Viewer - what is the event ID, and what is the source?

It sounds as though you are sending bad data to the print spooler and it's shutting down. Try running the System File Checker, which will scan for corrupt OS files. And you can also attempt to re-install the service pack - a pain but seems to fix a number of weirdnesses. Microsoft had good intentions when they designed the new service pack installs (meaning you weren't supposed to have to do this sort of thing) but practical experience tells me that it's not quite what it was intended to be.

Try at least applying SP1 and see if it fixes the problem.

Re: No resources for printer

More details - the original win2k install was taotally clean on an fdisked drive. I had to re-install to get dual boot going.

I have run sfc (thanks for advice on that) (no luck)followed by system mechanic and norton utilities but no improvement. Not only is print spooler playing up but I cannot reinstall SP1.
errors are:
SP1 re-install EventID 4355 -Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 installation failed.nThe remote procedure call failed.

Print problem - this happens on startup: System Log Manager Event ID 7031 The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.
WMI ADAP was unable to load the winspool.drv performance library due to an unknown problem within the library: 0x0
The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified

I'm screwed arent I??

Re: No resources for printer

You know Steve,

I wouldn't say that you are screwed but I will say that this is a very thorny problem at least and a total mess at worst. I would say a lot of it depends upon how much troublshooting you want to do. Do you want to take this to the nth degree and fix it? Or are you willing to back up your critical information, format again, and reinstall a few apps? Chances are very high that a re-install would work. From your description, it sounds as though a file is missing or a DLL (OCX, whatever) is not registered any longer. If you can't reinstall the service pack it's not a good sign.

For better or worse I have resigned myself to the occasional re-install to correct my problems, since I regularly beat my OSs into submission and they end up being a pain to deal with. You may think differently or have no way to back up your critical data.

Remove any recently installed applications and see if the problem is corrected.

You could try a parallel install, which is to install Windows into a separate directory and independently of the first - if you have the disk space. You could the a) migrate slowly to the new install or determine if it is a hardware problem of some sort that will occur again and again.

The other thing that I would suggest is tedious but could help. Try disabling all the startup services and apps that you absolutely do not need. You may need to edit the registry to accomplish it, but it's entirely possible that you have a faulty driver or component loading that is preventing the spooler from working.

You're not screwed. OK, maybe you are but after a while you get numb to the fact that PCs do this kind of thing.

You're officially accredited into the world of weary Windows installers. Unfortunately it means nothing for your pay, and if your friends find out you will be deemed a guru of Windows. Watch out!
