Lounge's custom dictionary?

In my recent <post#=432340>post 432340</post#> the lounge spell-checker signals "genetics" and "reproductive" as errors. WordXP says that they are OK.

Without getting into debates over clearly debatable issues, such as spelling "colour" properly, is it possible to nominate words to be added, by consensus, to the lounge dictionary?

Too many false alerts in a spell-checker render it impotent, and generally results in people being less likely to use it.

I think the Lounge is just trying to preserve it's "squeaky clean" image by kicking out the terms,

"genetics" and "reproductive" as errors. No terms applying to S*X allowed !

I have no idea why it objects to genetics and reproductive, which are perfectly valid words and spellings, but I believe the spell check is a web-based checker and not part of the Lounge that we control. Perhaps can enlighten us.

    Re: Lounge's custom dictionary?

That'll be because the words weren't in the dictionary. reproduction is but reproductive wasn't, gene is, but genetic wasn't.

I've now added those two words and am quite willing to add some more.

To get around the Limited spell checker I use IESpell . It allows the addition of words to your own dictionary and as a bonus it can be used on ANY web page in put page.

I do NOT know if it will work with any of the other NON IE browsers.

    Thanks, Claude.

I did not have in mind that new words should be added instanter, but that providing we found them they could ultimately be added, perhaps as a monthly batch.

I am a hopeless two-fingered typist, and try to remember to spell-check before posting to save 00s of readers struggling with my apparent inability to communicate in English. The better the spell-checker is, the more likely I am to use it, and the better the content of the lounge; that's the point I was trying to make.

(I shall abstain from making the observation that once we have "genetic reproductivity" within the dictionary, it ought to be able to look after itself, Darwinian awards notwithstanding).

P.S. could you please add "reproductivity" to the dictionary .........

    Claude

Given that the spell-checker is utterly US-o-centric, the only practical way of updating the dictionary would be for The Lounge Software to take note of all allegedly-misspelled words each time that someone used the spell-checker, and have the whole collection assessed by a competent authority, so that the correctly-spelled words can be added to the dictionary.

Lucky you have so little to do, eh?!

For those using Firefox or Mozilla you can use SpellBound. It is a multi-lingual spell checker with over 40 dictionaries available. It corrects any spelling mistakes and you can add words to a personal dictionary.

    Re: Lounge's custom dictionary?

I have been using the extensions Dictonary Search and Dict which has worked well for me in Firefox 1.0. The way I have use these extensions is that anything that I find underlined in "spell check" or anything I am uncertain about in my own post or another lounger's post, I can select it, right click and have the dictionary page come up in a new tab with the word I need! I appreciate your link however, because anything that can help me spell better is great to have onboard my computer!!

    Merry Christmas!
