Firefox does not like Woody's Lounge (1.0)

Firefox 1/0 does not seem to like loading, or reloading, the Main Index.

When I first go to http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/wwwthreads.pl. often the columns do not lign up correctly.
Many times, but not always, I can correect this by telling Firefox to reload.

Even so, the loading of the Main Index is very, very slow in Firefox.

With the growing number of folkes trying Firefox, it may be worth learning why these problems occur.

Although I an finding Firefox to be slower than IE, most sites do seem to load normally, but not Woody's Lounge.

There's a missing width parameter on the cell that contains the name of the board. IE apparently "does the math" more consistently than Firefox. Because it is not an emergency or an important feature, I think this is not something that will get changed right away. Hopefully you can live with it.

Re: Firefox does not like Woody's Lounge (1.0)

I suggest passing the lounge URL to the W3C validator and./or the http://www.htmlvalidator.com/.
Easier to fix problems a bunch at a time than 1 by one.

My web sete, as of the end of Oct 2004 had two non-standard table parameters, bordercolor, each in a separate page,
Took a heck of a lot of effort to get to that point.

    I've not replaced bordercolor because:

    1. I've no time to learn CSS.
    2. I've heard that CSS can cause accesibility problems for those with special needs.

The Lounge is generated using highly customized perl scripts, so validating the end result still means lots of tedious work on scripts. Weird but still readable columns widths just can't be a priority.

Regarding bordercolor, here's an easy find and replace:

    OLD: bordercolor="blue"

    NEW: style="border-color: blue"

That is supported back as far as version 4 browsers. I can't understand how it could cause an accessibility problem.

    Thanx, i'll try your suggestion.
I believe that I already tried a few months ago, perhaps my fat fingers mistyped something.

If you recall, sometime last year, I had a thread that involved accessibility. I, and others, posted some references.
Somewhere (that great source of all wisdom) I saw somthing that stated that CSS can cause problems for certain accessibity tools.

I do recall that someone from the organization that pointed me to the accessibility documents, sent me an email chastizing me for using CSS in one of my web pages as it prevented certain accessibility tools from adjusting font size.

Re: Firefox does not like Woody's Lounge (1.0)

It is very true that Internet Explorer's View>Text Size>Larger (etc.) does not alter sizes set in CSS. There is a checkbox to liberate the browser from the sizes set in a stylesheet in IE: Tools>Internet options..., General tab, Accessibility... button, "Ignore font sizes set on Web pages". This applies to all font sizes regardless of how set, and either the menu or Ctrl+scroll wheel can be used to zoom or shrink the text.

Firefox is slightly different. You can discard the effect of style sheets using View>Page Style>No Style, or you can zoom all fonts sizes (regardless of how set) with View>Text Size>Increase (or Ctrl+scroll wheel). Presumably IE will catch up in a future release.

As for what accessibility tool was too underpowered to change CSS font sizes, methinks the tool is the one that needs fixing, as CSS has been the web standard for many years.

Perhaps the tool was indeed at fault, but these tools tools are being used by disadvantaged people who may be limited in their choice of tools.
    That's the reality.

This assumes there ever was such a problem, and that the guy wasn't just yanking your chain. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15> Sites built using CSS for layout work significantly better for screen readers than sites built using old nested table methods. If font size is the only concern, Firefox allows rescaling of all fonts (and the price is right). Absent any specific, non-hypothetical problem, I think we all can safely use CSS (at least level 1).

Perhaps then you should be addressing your concerns with them?
