    Proliferating Word styles (2003 SP1)

I just replaced Word 2002 with 2003, and I can't remember how I had turned off one of Word's annoying "features." Say I have a style called "Body text". As I'm typing text in that style, I hit <Ctl-I> to italicize a word. For my convenience and to serve me better, Word automatically creates a new style called something like "Body text + Italic". It continues to create new styles for every permutation of text formatting I use, until there is a whole pile of styles I never wanted in the first place. How do I make Word stop doing this? Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge

Select Tools | AutoCorrect | AutoFormat As You Type.
Turn off "Define styles based on your formatting".

Hans -- thanks for the welcome and the reply. Your suggestion seems like the thing to do, but when I went to try it, I found that this field already *was* turned off. Does that tell you anything?

Not everything you see in the list of styles is a real style. Word also lists combinations of styles and direct formatting, such as "Body Text + Italic". This is not a style. "Real" styles have a symbol to the right of them in the list:

Hans -- thanks again for your response. Since these direct formatting items appear in the style list, I assumed they were styles.

What is the state of the checkbox at Tools > Options > Edit > Keep track of styles?
