    Open with list issue (sp2)

I wanted to add acrobat reader to the open with list of a file type which doesn't have any current open with associations, but does have a default open association. So went through the process of choosing "open with" - Browse and selecting the prog i wanted to use, but the association is not made. Even more oddly, when I look in HKCUSoftwareWindowsCurrent VersionExplorerFileExts[/i]fileextension[/i]OpenWith there are already 2 entries there (neither of which is the program I chose above) which don't show up in the context menu.

I've read somewhere about all programs in the open with list needing to be on a path included in PATH. My programs are in 2 locations - C:Program Files (system type progs only) and D:[/i]programnamefolder[/i]. Is it enough to add D: to PATH, and if so, how do I do so?

This obviously can't be the whole story, because there are already programs in the OpenWith dialogue box which are installed in D: (unless their installation utility added the precise path to that prog to PATH, I suppose).

    Thanks

Are you putting a check in the box for "Always use the selected program..." when you select the program you want to use ??

Yes, I've tried that, even though it's not the behaviour I want (I specifically want to add the program to Open With, not make it the default).

It still didn't work, and the default association wasn't made either. Neither was the program I selected (in this case AcroRd32.exe) added to the list of programs in the dialogue box - on this occasion and on attempting to repeat the procedure.

This problem is not specific to Acrobat reader, as I have noticed it previously, but don't have other specific examples, and can't remember if the progs were all on d rather than in crog files.

I've found the path command. Is there anywhere in the registry to set default paths, or will I have to add it to a batch file? Does autoexec.bat work in winxp, or would I have to make a separate file to run on startup?

    Thanks

You could try using OpenExpert - but I have never used it and can not make any comment on it.
Or try JSI Tip # 0126.

Re: Open with list issue (sp2)

    Lief,

I used OpenExpert with Windows 98, and found it to be a very useful tool to have. When I moved to XP and found the Open With command already on the menu, I simply left the OpenExpert utility off the system, figuring it was redundant. I followed your link and now find that it would be quite useful in instances like this as well as keeping things more the way I wnat them instead of how Windows wants to set things up. I've found the behaviour of the Open With function in XP to be irratic and capricious, moving programs on and off the list seemingly without any particular reason or pattern. It would seem that this utility will solve those issues, or at least give one back control over this area of the OS. Thanks for the tip. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Open with list issue (sp2)

    Thanks for all the tips.

A bit of feedback: adding folders to the path doesn't help. The behaviour remains the same. I can't get JSI tip 126 to work, in that * doesn't appear in my list of file types in explorer-folder options-file types. The example given would be too global for my purposes anyway, but it's good to know that you can add actions to the context menu - the registry edit appears unecessary. The final option, if one wants to add the prog to the open with list rather than adding an OpenWithprog to the context menu for that file type is to manually edit the open action to point to the desired prog, then change the default action back to the original default prog. The desired open with prog is now in the OpenWith.. menu.

But it's all a bit messy.

I'm a bit reluctant to try open expert as explorer is the most frequent source of crashes in my current setup, and I worry that explorer add ons will make this worse.

    Thanks for the pointers.

Re: Open with list issue (sp2)

    Joe (and Leif):

I ran into an issue at work (I just started working there so can't vouch for what was done on the PC I'm using).

My issue is there are 2 "Notepad" entries on the Open With menu and I'd like to see if we can get rid of one. I also managed to add Word to the Open With menu (we have some Autocad files that are plain text but I need Word's replace capabilities to make some changes, so I wanted to use Open With on these files).

When I added Word to the Open With menu (and I can't recall how I did that but that's besides the point), I did a search for changes to the C drive. I found an entry in c:windowsprefetch that seemed to correspond to my addition. There were 2 Notepad entries also with a bunch of numbers after each (different numbers on each entry). I removed one of the entries (picking arbitrarily) but Open With still had 2 Notepad entries. So this wasn't the answer. There were also quite a number of entries in the prefetch folder, much more than the 4 items on the Open With menu.

    So my questions are:
    - Do Open Expert and DKnox's utility help manage (both add and delete) items on the Open With menu? I don't want to download things for a work computer unless people have had positive experiences with them (my own computer is a different story)
    - what is the relationship between the Open With menu and the prefetch folder, if any?
    - I'd think the Send To menu, which is a little easier to manage, would be a substitute. Any comments on this strategy?

    TIA

    Fred

1.) For information on Doug Knox's utility see: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_open_with.htm. You have to make up your own mind about whether or not it is worth you while.
2.) There is not relationship between the prefecth folder and open with.
3.) If you want to use Send To go ahead. That is why it is called PERSONAL COMPUTING.

    Joe,

Thanks. I downloaded both Open Expert and DOug's utility and will give them a try.
