You should be able to add the Lexmark (if these drivers are available) or another generic printer by following the procedures in <!mskb=142984>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 142984<!/mskb>. Go to the "Manufacturer-Supplied Drivers" section.

    Re: Pretend Printer

Thanks very much to you, and John.

It just occurred to me that I may not be able to do what I want: the office runs Windows XP. Can I/should I download the proper file for a 98 system or XP. Or, can I not take advantage of this at all since 2 dfiferent OS' are involved?

    Thanks again,
    Curious

At the Lexmark site, as soon as you select the Optra SE 3455, the next screen will prompt you for your operating system. Pick whatever is appropriate.

    Re: Pretend Printer

I suspect what you may be asking is if a document is formatted to print to a specific printer with W98 drivers, will it be OK to print from another machine with XP drivers to the same printer.
I think you can safely assume that the printer specific formatting applied by Word will copy across different OS's without a problem - the drivers will tell the pc how to print, not what to print.

You do realize that even though you can install the Lexmark drivers on your system, but you will not be able to print to your HP printer using those drivers.

    Re: Pretend Printer

Yes, thank you, I do realize that.

I want the Lexmark driver on my system so I can be more certain that the margins I set are valid for that printer.

When I work on a file at home and then upload it at the office, I often have to fiddle with the page settings. My thought was that choosing Lexmark as the printer before I created the file at home would save me "hair out" time when I went to the office.

It was not to print the file - but to conform the settings on the file I created.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I now feel better about downloading the driver.
