Incoming mail showing as unread in sent folder (office 2000 win2k)

My father is coming up with the following situation.

He sends someone an email. When that person answers using the reply option, the incoming message shows up in dad's sent box, in bold text showing it as unread.

It is driving him crazy.

To be honest, I haven't seen any in this state to check anything (as he opens them)

Any ideas?

Does this only happen when a specific recipient replies? - or when anyone replies?
Sounds like it would be worh checking the rules for anything that may be moving emails to the Sent Items folder.

In addition to Leif's suggestion, see if anything has been set in the Organizer. (Any Organizer settings will still show up under Rules, but the user will learn more about how these things can happen.)

I don't want to impugn the user, but by any chance did he accidently delete his inbox and manually recreate it? If so his default Inbox Folder is lost, and should be recreated by starting Outlook with the /resetfolders switch.
