    Outlook Add-in : Anecdote (VB.NET 2003 & MS Outlook)

    Hi

This isn't a question, but rather a story, that I feel so dumb about, I just have to share.

I have been doing some experimenting with Outlook Add-ins and .NET and Remoting. Anyway, after getting everything to work well using wizards and the like, I set about doing everything manually (to actually understand all the steps). When it came to the last step of 'registering' the add-in with outlook i came across a hurdle.

All the documentation talks about adding a registry key called LoadBehavior (among a few others). I struggled for the best part of two days because I couldn't get outlook to recognise my add-in and load it!!!! After much in depth reading about registring .net DLLs for COM and Global Assembly Cache, I quite by chance noticed that I had spelt LoadBehavior the Enlish (proper - haha, sorry to the American's : LoadBehaviour) way, and in my many checks to make sure I had spelt everything correctly, I had overlooked that difference between American and English spelling. Two days!!!! And I call myself a programmer !!!!! haha

Anyway, I hope you all can have a little laugh....oh well!

    Merry Christmas.

I think you are quite right to point this out. The more aware of the problems that are caused between the two different cultures, the less likely this sort of accident will happen . I recall that recently a satellite was supposed to have crashed because of a difference in the measurement systems used in the design / programming. So in some circumstances these differences can cause very expensive errors, and possibly loss of life.

My pet hate is the problem that occurs with the use of the different date formats. I have been pushing for a long time for the use of the international date format which would help to alleviate this problem.
