    Can't open file (XP v 2002 SP2)

I need to open a file from a friend. He e-mailed it, but my work server wouldn't let it through. He's posted to his website, but when I try to open I get the a security warning asking me if I really want to open the file. When I click Open, I get the message:

"Microsoft Access cannot open this file. This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site. MS Access will not let you open the file due to potential security problems.

To open the file, copy it to your machine or an accessible network location."

I have downloaded the file to my machine.

Is this an access problem or a security settings problem? If it's a security setting problem where do I change the settings?

    Thanks for any help.

I've downloaded it to my computer so I'm not trying to access from a remote location. I assumed it was by design, but is there a way to override?

Do you mean that you get the message "This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site" when you try to open the copy you downloaded to your own computer? If so, did you save it to the hard disk, or to a network drive?

    Re: Can't open file (XP v 2002 SP2)

Could this be related to the XP SP2 behaviour of storing the Zone Id from which a file was downloaded in an Additional Data Stream (see this MSDN article about Additional Data Streams and <!mskb=883260>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 883260<!/mskb>).

If so then copying the file to a FAT32 formatted partition should work, or right clicking the file and choosing Unblock.

I did copy it to my laptop which isn't connected to any network drives. I did finally solve the problem by renaming the files. Then I opened properties. There was a security option that said UNBLOCK. When I selected that, I could open. I still don't understand why it thought the file wasn't on my hard disk. Oh well.

    Thanks for your help.

It knew that the file on your hard disk had been downloaded from the Internet, and which Internet Zone it had come from. When you told it to UNBLOCK you cleared this information.
