Quik Cop?

Can anyone help me determine if an e-mail I received is legitimate? I administer several mail lists at www.rootsweb.com. I have been receiving a lot of spam directed at one of these lists. Today, for the first time, I received an unsolicited e-mail supposedly from Quik Cop.

    Many thanks!

    The header reads as follows:

    Hi adysin

A quick search produced lots of references, almost all to the QuikCop website. It appears this is an anti spam filter that requires a manual reply to an email message to ensure that the message is sent by a person and not by an email robot. This type of filter, if not configured properly, can cause you to loose important messages such as newsletters and messages from people who refuse to "play the game" by replying.
One of the links I found is, apparently, to your website.

    Have a Great day!!!

Thank you, Ken. Now I am truly confused as that is in no way my website. I guess I will just ignore these Quik Cop e-mails then.

I administer several mail lists at www.rootsweb.com

If the link to RootsWeb isn't taking you to your website, then it appears that your website has been taken over.
When I manually enter your url, as mentioned in your first post, I still end up at the same site as my link.

Maybe someone else can jump in here with some suggestions?

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: Quik Cop?

I clicked on the link you refer to and was taken to a site dealing with Canada. Part of the text is as follows:

"Sincere apologies for posting what seemed to be TWO memos. My memo was ARRESTED by QuikCop -- and as I had had previous dealings with this person, forwarded my "arrest" notification to ____, list administrator (who) PROUDLY told me he has this person as a subscriber!!!!! Also, he did what I would not do -- he clicked on a certain line -- affiliated my address with QuikCop. Do we need QuikCop butting in on census postings? I thought it was bad enough with a certain person in Ottawa. Also, I had been advised by several list administrators of high renown to STAY AWAY from this site."

I don't want to clutter this up here, but it looks like something is wrong somewhere. When I enter the link in the first post (www.rootsweb.com) I end up at a different place than you did, Ken. Wonder what the problem might be? Here's the link to what I entered: Rootsweb.Com. Here's a screenshot (cropped) of what I saw at the site.

    Hi Al

Here is a screen shot of the page header from the link target in my first post.
Looks like the same site, different page, to me.
It also looks like RootsWeb hosts websites. Maybe it's one of those that adysin is refering to.

OT: Is this, by any chance, an Australian website?

    Re: Quik Cop?

    Hi Ken,

I clicked the link in your first post here and was taken to that Canada Census page. Typing www.rootsweb.com into my address bar takes me to the Rootsweb home page. I went to the quik.com site mentioned in the header that was posted and it appears to be an IP or web hosting site. QuikCop appears to be a product of theirs that is an email filter. The SPAM that is being generated is likely a confirmation request by QuikCop for email being sent to one of it's subscribers. It probably will send out these requests as long as one of the parties on this list continues to send mail to that particular address. Exactly as you had surmised.

I would have the owner of the account that is receiving the "SPAM", contact the person whose account is sending out these requests, by phone, to ask them to put their address on the trusted list if you don't want to reply to the SPAM. (if that's truely what this is.)
