    String Curtailment (Word 2000)

Is there a switch or means in word that allows for the curtailment of a mergefield or bookmark?

    e.g. Name = Duncan McDonald
    becomes Name = Dun McD

I am aware that there is a VB function - I think it is StrDel or similar but wondered if it could also be done just in word

    Regards

    Duncan

I don't think that can be done without VBA.

    Hi Duncan,

Can't be done with Word fields, unfortunately, since they lack any string manipulation functions (eg LEFT, RIGHT, MID, LEN).

    Cheers

If you are using mergefields then you may be able to shorten the strings there first. Eg in Excel or Access you can use a formula or query to shorten it before Word merges the result.
