Which OS ???

I'm restoring an old machine for a friend's 10 year old son to use as his "personal" system. I have a P-III 450 with 128MB RAM, SoundBlaster & 8MB Graphics card. The machine has a corporate installation of Windows 2000 Pro loaded, but I believe that it would be a better system for a kid and run a whole lot better if it were running Windows 98. I have an old Win 98SE CD I can donate to the cause. Any opinions on this ??

    Re: Which OS ???

win2k pro should run OK on the machine. It would definitely be more robust than 98. The rest just depends on what is going to be run on the system. Neither OS on that machine would be a particularly good gaming machine. Would be OK for most normal processes.

A lot of games will NOT run on a 2K OS.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Which OS ???

True, but a lot of (newer) games won't run on that system, regardless of OS. Anything more than a couple of years old should be okay, but as DaveA says, then they won't work on Win2k. Win98 seems to be the sensible option really as I assume games will be involved as it's for a 10 year-old...

Although lots of stability improvements in W2K and XP, the Win98SE OS isn't THAT bad, so I wouldn't hesitate to regress. BUT, even if the youngster "contents" himself with an 8 MB graphics card, I wonder if adding RAM might help, assuming it will be a gaming machine?

    Re: Which OS ???

Thanks to all who replied. I wrote a detailed response, but the internet ate my work when I tried to post it, so............... Short and sweet, I'm going with Win98 for simplicity and compatability. I'll load an old copy of GoBack to save me the trouble of fixing the thing after he @#$!% it up with spyware and such. He's the cause of me cleaning his family's PC 4 times since May, so I can't protect the system from his activities (although I'll try real hard !!!).

Again, thanks to all who responded.

All the more reason to go to XP and give the little a limited account.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Which OS ???

    Hi Doc

One alternative I've heard to the GoBack approach is to mirror your own clean installation of whatever to CD(s). That way, when the little bundle of joy screws everything up, you can simply FDISK the problems away and mirror back a working HD.

    Re: Which OS ???

I'd agree, excepting that I don't believe the hardware is up to the task (not enough RAM) and his father wants to do this on the cheap. To buy a copy of XP and the extra RAM would put us "over budget".

    Re: Which OS ???

Good thought, but there's no CD-RW drive. If there were, I'd sure consider making the guy a set of "Recovery Disks" like the OEM boxes come with.

    Re: Which OS ???

Doesn't have to be a CD (although CDRW drives are cheap these days). You could image to a second HD. Disks are relatively inexpensive. So is imaging software compared to the time & effort required to rebuild machines frequently.
