Crossposting

IanWilson posted an interesting question to the Internet Explorer forum (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=ie&Number=40259&page=0&view =collapsed&sb=5&vc=1>Post #40259) that really has implications in at least three other forums: Win98, Outlook & Outlook Express. Might it make sense to have some method to generate a link to the original message in other relevant forums? Perhaps a popup window with checkboxes could facilitate creating a notice in other forums pointing to the message in question.

    Re: Crossposting

I agree that some posts merit linking in other forums but since we discourage cross-posting in the regular run of things I don't want to offer an easy tool that would be too open to abuse. So... in those special cases where it's a good idea, we have to do it the hard way.

    Re: Crossposting

I remember the evils of crossposting from usenet of old -- reading and posting to a tax forum, some morons would crosspost to 10-20+ other groups ranging from religion to politics to jokes. Many people who replied would not think to remove all non-relevant groups from their reply, and the cycle would continue.

Although the potential for this sort of abuse does exist here, I'm not sure that it would be much of a problem. Aside from some obvious trolls, I presume that most posters bring some level of professionalism here, and are also aware of the value of this resource and thus are less likely to be intentionally abusive.

The biggest drawback of crossposting that I can foresee here is that multiple threads on the same original topic could develop across multiple forums. If a "crosspost notice" could be sent to other forums, stating something like "A discussion relevant to this Forum has been started in [Forum], entitled [hyperlinked Title]", this might serve a useful purpose while avoiding the worst evils of crossposting.

Ummm. A button *might* be a nice idea after all. I'll think about it.
