Twofer and XPPro SP2 (SP2)

    Hi,

I have used and loved Mike Chen's Twofer since it's birth.

But it doesn't seem to work under SP2 -- does anyone know if there's an update?

    Cheers,
    Lee

I wouldn't know what a "Mike Chen Twofer" was, even if it bit me. Since Google gives me nothing apparently rapidly relevant, it would be helpful to provide a link to a website or some explanation of what it does!

I presume you have tried to contacted the suppliers or the author?

    John

PS The word "twofer" is first recorded in 1911, from two for (a dollar, etc.)
In the UK, supermarkets use the much more pleasing term "BOGOF", being the initials of "Buy One, Get One Free"!

PPS Let's hope your customers don't actually have to type your full URL -- it's the longest I have ever seen!

Twofer is mentioned several times in the Lounge. See the threads starting at <post#=134013>post 134013</post#>, <post#=154491>post 154491</post#>, <post#=274193>post 274193</post#> and <post#=282173>post 282173</post#>. It probably hasn't been updated recently.

    John,

From our own lord and master.......

By the way... I never use Windows Explorer. I use Twofer, Vince Chen's brilliant, free utility that puts two copies of Windows Explorer up on the screen, so you can copy and move stuff around without getting stuck in folder expansion hell. It's one of those really amazing utilities that you can't live without. Over the years I've tried it on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4, and 2000, and it works like a champ. http://chkpt.zdnet.com/chkpt/hud0007500a/w...oads/stories/in

Aha! I was thrown by the reference to Mike, rather than Vince Chen!

(No, I can't get the link to work either, even when I take out the CR/LF between "in" and "fo"!)

Can't find much on "Twofer" but what about <!profile=MartinM>MartinM<!/profile> 's link in <!post=this post,436677>this post<!/post> . Sounds like a possible alternative to "Towfer".

In the States we pronounce that term "Bug Off" and if someone in a supermarket said that to us, we'd leave. I believe you Brits have another pronunciation that is not quite so pleasing. "@#$!% Off" I believe??

Re: Twofer and XPPro SP2 (SP2)

    Lee,

I did a bit more detailed Google and found the following info here. HTH.

Long-time WOPR contributor Vince Chen wrote a special utility for that issue called Twofer. It's an amazingly useful critter. It starts up two copies of Windows Explorer, side by side, so you can click and drag between the windows. Vince built in some very cool customizing tweaks - you can size and place the two windows any which-way and Twofer will remember. You can also pick different starting folders for each window. I've become a Twofer fan. Use it all the time.

And it's free for the download - just pop on over to http://www.pccomputing. com and download Twofer. Full instructions for installing and customizing Twofer are in the March issue of PC Computing (out now in the USA). An early version of twofer.zip went out without the readme.txt file.

If you got the early one without the instructions, drop by http://www. pccomputing.com again and pick up the latest version (if it is not there when you download try again later).

A few people have struck a problem where Twofer can't find MSVBVM5.DLL. This is a Visual Basic 5 runtime file that is installed by a wide range of programs, including many from Microsoft itself (like IE4). Due to the DLL's size (MB) and relative ubiquity its not included with Twofer. You can get the required file from the WOPR 'Essential Software Updates' page http:// www.wopr.com/ if needed.

Hey Doc, could you correct or clarify your links in the above post for PC Computing, please, as they do not work for me. Googling (so far) did not help either.

Re: Twofer and XPPro SP2 (SP2)

    Hi Al,

Sorry about the confusion. I didn't make those 2 URLs hot because PC Computing went under about 4 years ago. It was one of a slew of Zif Davis publications back in the "Roaring 90's" that didn't make it much past the new Millenium. The text I pasted was from the "live" link, almost at the bottom of the page under "Did you see this Win 95 utility?".

I have a copy of Twofer on my desktop that I seem to have downloaded yesterday, but I can't recall where I got it. I'll check my history and let you know.

a bit later

Say, isn't this the Windows equivalent of good old DIRMATCH for DOS?

Re: Twofer and XPPro SP2 (SP2)

You've got me. I'm having problems with my personal system and have been working on my kids machine to find a solution. I downloaded the file a couple days ago and haven't had a chance to play with it.

It seems Dirmatch has been upgraded or replaced by WMatch 2.0. I never did DOS, so I had never heard of Dirmatch.
