Unicode Revisited (Excel 2003 (SP1))

In Word 2003 one can enter a Unicode Value such as 00E6 then press Alt + x to produce the relevant character. This does not appear to work in Excel 2003 (SP1).
Is this a broken feature, or is there a different way to enter Unicode in Excel?

The Alt+x method of entering Unicode characters is specific to Word, it is not implemented in Excel. Use Insert | Symbol... to insert Unicode characters into an Excel spreadsheet, or copy/paste them from the Character Map accessory.

For some characters at least, if you convert the Hex value to decimal, you can then enter Alt + nnnn. In your example, 00E6 = 230 so entering Alt+0230 will give you

When entering characters using Alt+numeric keypad, Excel uses the (decimal) number modulo 256. Alt+65 and Alt+321 and Alt+2625 all result in "A". So you can only enter standard ANSI characters this way.

Looks like it's broken then. According to Excel's Help, the Alt + X method should work. Clearly it doesn't. T

To locate where is states this, go to Help, Search for "keyboard". Select "Keyboard Shortcuts". At the very foot of this topic, expand "Work with multiple national languages". Go to the end.

ALT+X
Pressed immediately after typing the hexadecimal code for a unicode character, converts the numbers to the character.
Pressed immediately following a unicode character, converts the character to its hexadecimal code.
