    Menubar & toolbar disappears (Word2003)

    I program in VB [6 and .NET] to interact with word. We have recently
    upgraded to Word 2003 from Word 97 and have discovered several quirks. The
    latest is a VB6 program opens a document in Word and turns Visible on
    [it's inVisible previously to keep Word from flashing while it opens as it
    started doing with Word2003].

    On some users PCs, including the developer PC, the document opens just
    fine but for a couple of users Word opens with all toolbars and the
    menubar turned off. All they see is the top blue bar, the ruler and the
    bottom bar with the "Normal", "Outline" view buttons, etc. I can't find
    how to turn everything back on. If they close that instance of Word and
    open it again from the desktop it opens with all toolbars, menubar and
    everything.

    I suspect there is some setting on these users PC which I need to change
    but what and where is it?

    Re: Menubar & toolbar disappears (Word2003)

    Appreciate the site, Hans but my code already sets the Windowstate after setting Visible to true.
    --------------------
    dim sName as string
    dim sBillNo as string
    sBillNo = "NewDoc"
    sName = "C:Test" & sBillNo & ".ENG"

    Word.Application.Visible = False
    Word.Documents.Open sName

    'various processing of text

    Word.Application.Visible = True
    ActiveWindow.WindowState = wdWindowStateMaximize

    'attempt to dissuade Word from opening without menubar or toolbars
    If ActiveWindow.View.SplitSpecial = wdPaneNone Then
    ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.Type = wdNormalView
    Else
    ActiveWindow.View.Type = wdNormalView
    End If
    AppActivate sBillNo & ".ENG" & " - Microsoft Word"
    -----------------------

    any other ideas appreciated.

    Re: Menubar & toolbar disappears (Word2003)

    We ran into the flickering problem in Word 2003 too, upgrading from Word 97. But in Word 2003 you can specify that the doc to be opened should be visible or not:
    <font face="Georgia">Documents.Open FileName:="C:Test.doc", Visible:=False</font face=georgia>

    In our case, that helped. Most of our users start Word in the morning and close it when they leave the office in the afternoon. So they are opening files in an already running instance of Word.

    Thanks for the tip, Jan. I'll try that.

    How do you set the document to visible when you want to show it to the user; would I have to close it then open it visible=true?

    Could this problem be related to some users using Outlook with Word as their email editor? Does it make a difference if Outlook is closed?

    Re: Menubar & toolbar disappears (Word2003)

    Interesting observation, Andrew; but I'm pretty sure all users including my PC [as developer] had Outlook open.

    I cannot use Word as my email editor and a member of the network guys said the administrator may have suppressed the option and if that is so none of the users would have it either.

    Thanks

    Re: Menubar & toolbar disappears (Word2003)

    Good question!
    The way I use it is for a "go between" document to manipulate some text and then close that doc without saving changes. So I never attempted to make it visible again, until you came up with that question. Now I'm stumped, because there seems to be no way to make that doc visible after opening...

    It's been four days with no solution, so here comes my suggestion: Is the registry Data key corrupt? In all my previous dealings with Office97, and I have no reason to suppose it's been fixed in XP, problems with command bars could be patched by deleting a specific registry key. This may not solve you problem, but it may lead to a clue to the source of the problem?

    The key is/was <pre>HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0WordData</pre>

    , substituting an appropriate version for the 10.0.

    In the past I learned to delete this key with impunity. Once reset, I'd save it to a small *.REG file and try to incorporate that into my "cleanup" sequence..

    Appreciate the continued interest in my plight. The users are all on holiday for a time but I will check out the registry possibility when I can. Thank you J.

    As for the visible/invisible document, I may have to just close it and reopen it visible before showing it to the user. Thanks Jan
