    SP2 Hangs (XP Home)

SP2 installation hangs up at the "Estimating space for installation" window. There are 10's of GB of space left on the hard drive, so it can't be a "not enough space" problem -- even so, the SP2 installation doesn't report a space problem, it just stops with the error message displayed.

Any suggestions as to what I can do next?

Do you have your firewall and AV software turned off during the attempted install? If not, try doing so and see if the installation will proceed. I know it's a local install and shouldn't have any bearing, but it has worked for others.

I'll have to check that one out, as the computer is at our local Senior Citizens Center. As far as I recall, however, there is no AV or firewall installed. One reason for installing SP2 was to get the firewall setup before connecting to the internet.

    Chuck,
    Any error message NUMBER given?
First, make sure you empty all Temp folders and TIF folders.
Disable all Anti Virus and other "blocking programs" from running.
    Stop all running programs possible.
Run "chkdsk" from the "run" menu.
Make sure you page file is big enough.
    How much memory?

There was no error number. However, next time I get the chance I'll checkout all of your other suggestions.

    Couple more suggestions:

    - to empty Temp folders, use Disk Cleanup utility: Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup. But DO NOT use "Compress old files" option!

    - Check your hard drive clicking Start | Run, typing
    chkdsk /r
hiting Enter and restarting your computer. You can also use /f switch instead of /r, but /r performs two more steps - you may need it.

    - After checking (and fixing) hard drive errors, defragment it (Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter).

Now you are ready for upgrade.
