Can one send 'console' type messages? (XP SP2)

I have 4 computers on my peer to peer network and would like to be able to send a message to one or all of the other users. I'm looking for something that works like a console message on a mini/mainframe. Is this possible in XP?

A quick google for <code>"peer to peer" "net send"</code> lists a variety of freeware tools that claim to be able to do this job. I haven't tried any of them.

You can use the 'net send' command. However, to do this you have to re-enable the Messenger service which is disabled by default with SP-2. In Help and Support search for 'net send' for the complete syntax.

NET SEND is the usually-suggested tool -- but for the message to be received the user has to be logged on. Messages sent to a logged-off user are just ignored.

Would sending an email to the user be appropriate?!
