PC does not see keyboard on installing XP (XP Home edition)

Please please can any one help with this problem.

I have just installed XP Home Edition and for some odd reason it is not seeing the keyboard which is infra-red.
I have checked the batteries and they are ok and also l have pressed the appropriate buttons on the mouse and infra red device at the same time to detect the keyboard but still no luck.

I would be really grateful for any assistance in this matter.

Just for info, I locked your post in the Hardware forum so we don't get multiple answers. If we don't get you some help here, I can always move this thread over to Hardware later. The first thing I ask is do you mind saying what brand name/model the mouse-keyboard combo is? Also, is it really infrared or might it be RF? Do you have in your toolbag a bootable DOS floppy disk of some kind? It would be a good test to see if booting to real DOS, the BIOS recognizes the mouse-keyboard combo in its native condition. That might let us know if we truly have a Windows problem or a "device" problem.

How is the keyboard connected, PS2 or USB?

To check if this is a Windows or Hardware problem can you check whether the BIOS can see the keyboard when you power up the PC (usually there will be a menu saying type DEL or ESC or something to enter SETUP).

Re: PC does not see keyboard on installing XP (XP

    Hi,

The brand of my keyboard is Logitech and l am sure it is infra red.
I have tried booting from a DOS disk but still the PC does not see the keyboard or mouse in DOS.
Also tried putting keyboard in USB2 port but no luck.
I am totattly baffled as to what caused this problem. All l done before it occured was to install some screen drivers.
Then re-booted and l found keyboard was not working.
Is there a jumper setting that l could use. Maybe to reset BIOS. could that be a solution?
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

I'm puzzled by the fact that booting to DOS doesn't see the keyboard. That would make it look like a BIOS problem. I wouldn't think you need to reset everything in the BIOS, but you should at least take Stuart's suggestion and go in there and look to see what is set. You said the BIOS saw the device, so I hope you don't take offense when I ask you what did you see? Normally during POST there will be messages as the IDE devices and so on are recognized. There will usually be two lines for the mouse and keyboard "recognition." Did you see those two lines? I guess it could be a super-strange coincidence and the KB may have taken this time to go belly-up on you. Can you lay your hands on a standard keyboard to try?

    Welcome to the Lounge!

Justin, Windows "knows" much of hardware, but not all possible devices. That's why hardware manufacturer usually includes CD with "drivers" - small programs that enable Windows communicate with a device.
Look around - I'm pretty sure there is a CD that came with your keyboard - insert it and wait for a while (usually it has Autorun program). If it is not started automatically, start (double-click) the file named "Setup" or "Install".
If for some reason you cannot find the CD, visit Logitech webpage - http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/download...US/EN,CRID=1796, choose your keyboard (there are pictures) and download driver installation program. If you have dial-up connection, please be patient (some programs are huge - around 20 MB). Save the program to your hard drive first and then install it (double-click).

I hope it will solve your problem; if not - please post what was wrong.

When it is not connected to USB, how is it connected (if by wireless then where is the wireless receiver connected)?

Some BIOS variants have a parameter called "Legacy keyboard support" or similar, which you have to set if you want to use a USB keyboard, see for example <!mskb=310923>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 310923<!/mskb>.

What BIOS manufacturer and version do you have? Have you carefully checked all the BIOS screens for keyboard related parameters?

    Stuart,

I have a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse setup that came with my system (I use the mouse, but not the keyboard). The line from the wireless receiver for the keyboard has a USB plug connected to a PS2 adapter and the instructions say that the PS2 adapter must always be used with the keyboard. I'd suspect that this setup is the same.
