Removing Outlook Express (Win XP Pro SP2)

    Hi folks,

I'm having a dickens of a time removing Outlook Express from my system. (Dell P4, Win XPPro SP2, IE 6). I've deselected it via the add/remove components option in the Control Panel, but it still appears when I click on a mailto: link in IE 6. (And, in IE 6, I have my preferred mail program, Becky!, specified as the default mail program.) I've even tried "installing" OE via the control panel, then uninstalling it, but it still pops up when I hit a mailto: link.

    Any suggestions for killing this undead program will be gratefully received. <img src=/S/smash.gif border=0 alt=smash width=30 height=26> <img src=/S/hailpraise.gif border=0 alt=hailpraise width=27 height=22>

Take a look here and see if that helps.

Rather than remove OE (which could be required by some other program) use 'Set Program Access and Defaults' on the Start menu. 'Set Programs...' also exists as part of the add/remove programs applet.

    Ah! The boards are back!

Thanks for the link, Doc. I'll give that a try, since adjusting Program Access didn't seem to work.

Thanks, Joe. I tried playing with that after your suggestion, but OE still hijacked the mail links. I appreciate the tip, however. Maybe further noodling around will do the trick.

See <!mskb=315240>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 315240<!/mskb> for details about changing the default mail program. You could also try changing the data value at this registry key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTmailtoshellopencommand
