    Invalid Boot.INI (Home Edition SP1)

Now that my hard drive problem's fixed, I find I have another one.

When I boot I see : invalid boot.ini. Booting from C drive. Windows then starts normally. I did a search and found no Boot.ini. I only see Boot.ini.backups found in C:Windowspss.

How do I get the file boot.ini which belongs in C:Windows?

The next time any hardware's to be installed,, you can bet I'll take it to a professional.. Home remedies may be cheaper, but in the long run, more expensive in time and frustration.

See this HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP. Note: Boot.ini is in the root of the boot drive not the Windows folder.

Re: Invalid Boot.INI (Home Edition SP1)

I found that one yesterday along with Invalid Boot.ini or Windows could not start error messages when you start your computer - Article # 330184. Also The purpose of the Boot.ini File in Windows XP - article # 289022.

The problem with not being able to edit the ini file is that I don't have one to edit. I only have the backup ini file.. I checked that all files were visible and it was checked. I need to know if I can create an ini file or download it from somewhere. I tried to use SFC from Run, but it appeared and disappeared . It never did that before. It won't stay visible long enough for me to use it..

I need a lot of help with this one, I've done all I know how to do.

Boot.ini is just a text file. Create one with Notepad. Use "save as" and select 'All types' so you can name it boot.ini.

Are you sure you have all THREE of the attached boxes marked as I do? How about the "other" drive? I've lost track of your other thread and what that drive letter is, but you have to have a boot.ini file somewhere or the system wouldn't run. You should check the root directories of BOTH drives. If there really is none, then your system must be booting from that backup copy you mentioned. You could open it up with a text editor and see what it says, then save it AS boot.ini in the root directory of one or BOTH drives. I think this all goes back to your other thread and where you have Windows installed vs. which drive is the boot (master?) drive. I dunno, Gloria, you may have to go back to square one and re-do your installation if this one can't be resolved.

I'll do as you suggest tomorrow, my brain has refused to do any more tonight. I will post back and give you the results of all I find out.

Thanks Doc, you and Joe have been wonderful. Happy New Year to you and all Loungers. I'm so glad Woody's OK, but my heart's breaking for all those poor people, alive and dead.
