    Zip Support (VB.Net 2003)

Has anyone found any built-in support in .Net for zipping or compressing files? I know WinXP has it, but our apps have to run on other versions of Windows as well. I know there are 3rd party apps that provide that functionality. I just can't find anything definitive to tell whether .Net has anything like this built in.

Wow - that's a tricky one! There's nothing built-in to the .NET Framework (that I could find) to allow for this.

I did find a link to an open source (free) component for compression, including ZIP: http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/Shar...ib/Default.aspx

Hope this is what you're looking for...

Yes, and if you're using C#, there is a J# library you can use at http://codeproject.com/csharp/VmEasyZipUnzip.asp, but since we've used DynaZip in Access 97 and XP, we might as well use the VB.Net version if we're going to have to play with another library anyhow. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

I also discovered the free Zlib, which looks good and is the basis for what was ported to C#. However, I'm still trying to figure out how to use the darn thing! If anyone has any experience with this in VB.Net, I'd love some pointers. <img src=/S/please.gif border=0 alt=please width=31 height=23>

    Hi Charlotte,
If you look at http://net.thevbzone.com/, in the menu there are some VB modules, one of which is modCompress.vb using Zlib, which may give you some pointers. (I haven't examined it too closely so I hope it's relevant!)
    HTH.

Thanks, Rory, I'll take a look. Right now, I'm stumbling along using the zip capabilities of the Java libraries and trying to translate java code into VB.Net, with reasonable success.

OK, just to round this out, I referenced the VS.Net Java library and have the zip and unzip working using Java.IO and Java.Utils. It's actually pretty simple but may not be what we use in the final application. Thanks for the suggestions.
