Queries including a linked table (XP)

I have a database that uses both front end and back end tables. We need to pull data from read-only back end tables and supplement it with 'local' information. I'd like users to be able to update front end tables while also seeing the back end tables. Is there a way to create a query that combines back end and front end tables and still update the front end fields (all attempts so far are not updateable)? I considered using subforms as a work around, but would like to use a query if possible. Thanks.

It shouldn't matter whether the tables are local or linked. For a query based on multiple tables to be updatable, there must be a unique index on the join field(s) on the "one" side of the join.

The primary keys are not designated when link to the back end tables. Is there a way to do this from the front end?

I'd guess that the backend tables being read-only is making the recordset non-updatable.

Mark has probably hit the nail on the head - if the backend table is read-only, any query based on it will not be updatable.
