    Forwarding E-mail Hangs Outlook (2003)

    Hi All,
When I use Word as my editor and when I attempt to Forward a message, Outlook freezes and I am forced to use Task Manager to End Task Outlook.
When I go back into Outlook, if I remove Word as the editor, I can Forward just fine.
    Any ideas?
Thanks very much...and Happy New Year.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

I'm afraid that you already found the culprit and the solution. Using Word as mail editor is the cause of many problems, so the general recommendation is not to do so...

Thank you very much for your reply. I would love to uncover what the problem is. I actually was using Word as editor fine for several weeks. Then suddenly I developed a problem with it. I must have done something but in "backtracking", I'm unable to determine what it was.

If you have changed any settings in Word or Outlook recently, you might try changing them back, but the problem that Outlook stops responding when trying to forward an e-mail is mentioned a few times in the newsgroups, each time in connection with Word as the mail editor.

Thanks for the idea but I could not recall changing settings.
    1. Is there anything I should know about trying to reinstall Outlook?
    2. How do I keep my settings?
    3. Do you know how I might search for and find the threads you referenced?
Thank you again so much for your help.

Have you blocked Word from accessing the internet with your firewall?

Your problem may NOT be with Outlook or Word but some change made to the security of your system.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    1. First, try Help | Detect and Repair... in Outlook. You may have to insert your Office CD.
    2. Your e-mails, contacta, appointments etc. are in a file with extension .pst. - see File | Data File Management...
Settings are partly in the registry, partly in files in Cocuments and Settings<username>Application DataMicrosoftOutlook.
    3. I used Google > Groups, with search terms outlook forward hangs or something similar.

    Also look into DaveA's suggestion.

Outlook 2003 works better with Word than previous versions. (Even Woody has been known to use Word with Outlook 2003.) You might also try backing up your existing version of Normal.dot in ...|Documents and Settings[username]Application DataMicrosoftTemplates. Once you have done so, delete the version that is there and see if things change. If not, make sure you restore the backed up version - as Normal.dot holds all your Word customiusations. HTH
