Shortcuts can not be deleted (XP)

Hi all,

I was asked by a family member to solve his problem.
He claims that he has some shortcuts on his desktop that he can not remove. The shortcuts appeared after his young child "surfed the internet" on the computer. The links also show in his Favorites list.

Right clicking on the icon does not work, I checked under "Documents and Settings" to look into the favorites directory but they do not show here either. Explorer is set to show all files.

Does anyone recognize this problem ?
I am not on the computer with the problem now, but I will try any suggestion asap.

MTIA

My best wishes to all loungers and their relatives.

Sounds like spyware or adware from your brief description. Are they running any of the "standard" tools" to detect and remove spyware/adware ?? Adaware, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster are the primary tools in my bag and all are . A bit more information about the icons (what are they??) and where this "small child" was surfing on the internet would be helpful. What programs or internet pages do the icons/shortcuts represent ???

Hi Doc,

I know my relative did run Adaware, but I am not sure of what else he tried more.
I will ask him next year (=tomorrow).

Same goes for the other information you asked for (icons/shortcuts).

I will come back tomorrow.

Happy New Year !

Hi Doc,

here I am again.
Did you celebrate the old to new on a decent way ?

I made a copy of the relevant icons on the desktop.

Do you recognize anything ?

I will come back tomorrow, I have to go now.

Happy New Year Walter. I celebrated quietly, at home with my family and couldn't have had a better time if I were in Times Square in New York. Hope your's was equally enjoyable.

Your friend has most assuredly picked up some type of Adware and perhaps Spyware as well. Anytime you are presented with "new" icons on your desktop that you didn't put there and have usually shown up after an internet session or after you have installed some new program, game or utility, it's a pretty good indication that something is amiss. You should NEVER click on these icons or shortcuts, but go directly to your arsenal of Spyware removal tools, update and run each one. Have them take a look here for some help. It's a pretty good step-by-step on how to detect and remove these pests.

Re: Shortcuts can not be deleted (XP)

Hi Doc,

I did not manage to sit behind my computer yesterday, but today I am back into business .
We also had a quiet New Years Evening party a home, but at midnight the fireworks started in my home town, so the silence was gone.

As I promised, I had a look at the computer of my brother in law. I sent a printscreen from the desktop in an earlier post. In the mean time we did run Adaware again, but now in safe mode. Adaware found a few things, but non of them removed the icons. I also ran Msconfig and unchecked everything in the Startup that looked suspicious, but to no avail.

I will study the links you gave me and try to follow all the tutorials and step-by-step walk-throughs. It might take a while before all of this is covered, but I will report back (with good or bad news).

Thanks again for your help .

Best regards,

Ask your brother-in-law if his homepage has been changed to some game or gambling site ??? And if so, what is the site address ?? Also, ask him to right-click ONLY on each of the icons and choose "Properties" from the dropdown menu and then make a note of the "Target" for each icon or shortcut. I'm guessing that they all point to web addresses for a gambling site. This information might also tell us what spyware/adware we are dealing with.

Re: Shortcuts can not be deleted (XP)

Hi Doc,

I have tried your <post#=385669>post 385669</post#> and followed the step-by-step checklist from http://www.dslreports.com/faq/8428 up to Spybot S&D.

A lot of things were found and deleted. Result : the Icons on the desktop are gone. But other things are still there : In the Favorites list the "bad" sites still show and, when launching Internet Explorer a fake taskbar appears with the same "bad" sites on it. I will send a picture of these in this post and in the next one.

Spybot S&D reported a bad entry that not could be deleted, and it still was not deleted after a reboot. How can I handle that ? Could Hijack This do the trick ?

Please continu reading in my next post.

Have a look at Viruses: Help with searchweb2
Scroll down to the discussion and look at the comment of Lobo. He give a link to an uninstall program that was used successfully.

Re: Shortcuts can not be deleted (XP)

In the Favorites picture the "bad" sites are : Computer, Movie, Games, Web Hosting and Casino Online. A "right" click on them only says "Close taskbar", no sign of properties or whatsoever.

In the "Taskbar" picture these sites show again. One can close the "taskbar" with the "X" tag on the right top of the "taskbar", but it comes back when launching Internet Explorer again.

I found that clicking "Make Money" will make IE open http://searchweb2.com/search/search.cgi?s=make+money and clicking "Investing" will take you to the same URL except the search is for "investing".

Could this information give you a hint where I should look further ?

I would be very grateful for any clue/hint/tip offered.

The Searchweb2.com tool bar is an add on that comes with Yahoo, Messanger Plus!. It is spyware added when you install messanger plus and have clicked to allow the other componets to install at the same time. To remove it just just do Add/Remove and remove messanger plus. It may also be sitting in other places in the resistry, but just removing it and restarting your computer should take care of the problem.

Altnet has something to do with peer-to-peer and Kazaa. If you use Kazaa you may not want to remove it. On the other hand, It may be spyware or adware. The one site that cliams it's no good is suspicious to me. I'll look around for other references and possible fixes.

Thanks for this information, Doc.

I noticed that Kazaa is installed on my brother-in-law's computer. So that could explain the registry key.
I very much appreciate that you will have a look around for possible fixes or other references.
