Navigation pane - characters cut off (2003 SP1)

Wow, this is quite different than Outlook 2002, and it's taking a while to bend to my will.

I have a problem in the Navigation Pane to the left of the Inbox. A few characters seem to get cut off from the longer folder names. I understand from this thread on Navigation pane fonts that the font size is a function of the Windows display settings. Hmmm... what's strange is that the pane first displays in small Arial (?) text, everything fully visible. As soon as I interact with the folder list, the text becomes a larger Tahoma, and seemingly fails to repaint outside the area occupied by the smaller text, as illustrated below.

Earlier this month, there was a similar problem discussed on the usenet newsgroup microsoft.public.outlook.general. Some relevant excerpts:

I have isolated the source of the display problem. When I boot my Dell Inspiron in the docking station (I do not use an external monitor) I have the font display problem in Outlook. If I boot the machine outside of the docking station everything displays normally, even after adding the laptop back into the docking station.

I updated the firmware on the docking station but to no avail. At least I have a workaround in that I can boot out of the dock.

I had this problem some time back and one of the good folks (Diane) here was able to solve it for me. The solution is:

Right click on the desktop and choose properties. On the themes tab, save the current theme, then select the windows xp theme. If it doesn't help, you can go back to the theme you saved - although since it fixed it for Andy, I expect it will fix it for you as well.

Well, okay, but I don't really consider giving up all my display customizations a "solution." I noticed in playing with the settings behind the Advanced button that it is the Menu font and font size that determine the appearance of the folder list in the Navigation pane. It seems like a great sacrifice to make all menus smaller in all applications to avoid this annoying "clipping"/"truncation" effect in the Navigation pane, so I guess I'll have to live with it for now.

    All brilliant suggestions welcomed!

    Jefferson,
Have you applied SP1 (and all of the other updates to O2003)? I remember I had exactly the same problem. I really can't remember when the problem disappeared but I know I didn't fool around with themes or modify the font sizes. I'm assuming that the problem with the cut off characters was corrected with one of the MS updates.

edited to add: duh! obviously you have SP1.

Because I'm still running Office XP, with the exception of Outlook 2003, I'm relying on Help>About and not using Office Update or anything else to verify the patch level. I mostly trust that OL03 was slipstreamed correctly -- and I would be nuts to mess around with the individual files at this point.

Actually, the only updates of significance for Outlook 2003 since SP1 are a few Junk Mail Filter updates. The latest, which includes earlier updates, can be found here . I'm sure this won't solve the truncated navigation pane entries however. I just wish I could remember what solved this problem on my systems.

I've noticed that closing all the minus signs and re-opening them usually restores the folder names, so even though the top level names are messed up, the next level is readable. I think that's a good enough workaround for now.

Regarding the junk filter, even on low it seems tragically inaccurate. It especially hates messages from me! So I'm going to rely on our server-based filter for now (eManager) which seems to be doing a pretty good job.
