Registry Software (XP Pro SP 1)

Any favorite programs that people use to check (and fix safely) the Registry? I'm no longer interested in mucking around manually in the Registry, but I'd like to be able to use a *trustworthy* program to optimize, get rid of old keys, tune-up and backup the Registry.
Thanks in advance.

Mark,
My favorite is System Mechanic. It will SAFELY remove debris from the reg, defrag it and also get rid of junk files. It has other good utility things in it's suite of tools. I've used it since it's initial release a few years ago and trust it to do what it says.

Check out a free trial at System Mechanic

Bob,
Thanks for the quick response. I've downloaded both the Pro and Regular. I suspect from looking at the specs that the Regular is sufficient, as I already have a firewall. Which do you use?
TIA

Mark,
I use the regular "standard" strength. I find it fits all of my needs and I too have another firewall.
I trust that programs suggestions to the max. If it says it isn't needed, I delete it and have never had to go back and replace anything. ( which it WILL do if you have to undo anything. Recommend it highly.

These used to be highly thought of Macecraft Software - Home of jv16 PowerTools and RegSupreme. Here's a link to the last version Last Freeware version: jv16 Powertools, RegCleaner, PowerArchiver, PopCorn. There's also ToniArts - Easycleaner ( too). The usual caveats about being very careful when messing with the registry apply.

Joe,
Thanks for the suggestions, though I get a bit worried when you write "used to be highly thought of" !! oops - what si the current state? Do you use any of these products?
TIA

IMO JV16 lost some of its luster when it went from freeware to shareware. I don't have it anymore so I can't really comment about the quality.

I have been a long-time user of Registry Healer. I don't know how popular it is, and I guess once you have it you tend to keep it. It makes you create a restore point as insurance before you run it (although you can override that), and you may be astonished at the number of changes it proposes to make. You can go through them all and examine them if you wish, but I trust it enough not to bother now. It has an Easy Mode and an Expert Mode. I don't run it often, but when I do I get the impression that it's doing a lot of work.
