    MPEG-2 Video Codec (XP Pro)

I am running windows media player 10 under XP pro SP 2. I have an mpeg2 video on CD that I want to play but media player says I lack the codec. Looking throughout the MS site tells me that I will need to download the codec from outside vendors at a price of 20$ min. Is there a freeware source of this codec?

Check here to get the Codec or here to get a utility to see if you already have it on your system.

Re: MPEG-2 Video Codec (XP Pro)

    Doc,
Thanks for the info. I installed the codec and I still couldn't get media player to play the mpeg2 video file. Installed the utilty and it shows the codec but says that if I make it my preferred codec that Windows won't be happy due to synchronization problems. I made it my preferred codon anyway and it still didn't work, media player telling me that one or more codecs are missing. Stinkey says if the codon doesn't work, to install VB 6.0 runtime dlls. I did that and there is still no difference.

Any suggestions on what to check next would be appreciated.

    Peter,

Sorry for the misdirection. Give this site a try first and you might want to check here for some further reading on the subject. And for a complete understanding of Codecs and how to find the one you need and the ones you have, go here.

Re: MPEG-2 Video Codec (XP Pro)

    Doc,
Many thanks for the leads. I read through them all and it looks like my only option to play Mpeg2 movies with Media Player 10 under Win XP Pro SP2 is to purchase the codec upgrade from Cyperlink [my current codec version is 3.5.0.1929 - accessible by typing dvdupgrd.exe /detect from the run command].
Since I have only one movie I'm interested in viewing, I'm going to convert the mpeg2 to an AVI, with some software I have, and look at it that way.

Probably the easiest and least expensive way to go. I never understood how they figure people are going to adopt a format if they make it impossible to read without special software at a price that is way out of line with it's limited usefulness. Where would MP3s be if you had to download a special driver or player that cost <img src=/S/money.gif border=0 alt=money width=17 height=15> when the files are free ???
