Re: XP repair fails (XP SP?)

I suspect you are right.

If you have another PC available then it might be worth connecting the suspect disk to a working PC and running chkdisk across it. Even if you can't fix the disk you may be able to copy files from it.

Re: XP repair fails (XP SP?)

If the machine in question is FAT32 and not NTFS, I would try booting the system with a DOS floppy disk to see if the thing will at least boot. If so, see if you can "see" the hard drive. If you can, you might check for the presence of the BOOT.INI file since I don't know if that could be the culprit. (remember to do the DIR command with the /ah /as /ar parms)

XP repair fails (XP SP?)

Edited by Bigaldoc to add URL code.[/i] See the Quick Guide or 1-Click TagPanel.

Windows XP won't boot even in safe mode. It just hangs. I booted from the CD in an attempt to try the suggestions at Windows XP Crashed? Here's Help but, when in the recovery console and asked to select the OS to repair, I select the OS, i.e. enter a "1", it just hangs.

So I went to try the steps at How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install which bypasses the recovery console. After starting the install process, accepting the license agreement, etc., I get "Searching for previous versions of Microsoft Windows" and then it hangs.

At this point, I'm assuming that it is probably a hard disk failure - a bad sector that it can't get past. However, before losing everything that is on the machine, I thought I'd see if anyone has any other ideas or any way that I can potentially confirm this.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: XP repair fails (XP SP?)

I booted with a floppy and the C drive was not available. I removed the drive and put it in another box. There were no obvious problems. I ran CHKDSK on it and it didn't report anything unusual but Windows still wouldn't boot from it. Attempted Safe Mode and it loaded a bunch of drivers:

.
.
..ntfs.sys
..NDIS.sys
..Mup.sys
..agp440.sys

and then it hangs. This means that it can access the hard drive since it is getting the drivers. Recover by booting from the CD still had the same problem as before as well as re-installing from CD. The recover console can find out enough to know that windows is installed at c:windows so some parts of the drive are accessible.

I've been considering Spin Rite from www.grc.com. Has anybody had any experience with this utility? I also need to check with my brother's girlfriend to see what she wants to do and what she is willing to spend...

Whatever you do, I think you should start by backing up anything useful or needed from that disk.

Sorry if you got a notice of a post which I immediately deleted. I had a senior moment and didn't read your previous post! I have to agree with Stuart, that this drive looks like it's dead or at least in a funeral procession. You will find that Steve Gibson's SpinRite "might" be able to repair the drive, but that's a lot of money to pay for what may not be successful.

Actually, I forgot to look for the boot.ini file when I put it on the other system so maybe I'll do that for fun later. I'll probably just replace the drive and get what I can off of it because I doubt it is worth attempting to resuscitate. And then teach my brother's girlfriend how to make backups.

Before you write off the drive as useless, you might want to see if a trashed master boot record is the cause of all this. If you have any "mission critical" data or simply anything you don't want to lose on the drive and you can access the drive and copy off the data, do that first. Then reinstall the drive, boot into recovery console and type FIXMBR. This will rewrite the master boot record. With luck, that will allow you to boot to Windows again. Good luck. With the fix and with getting your brother's girlfriend to do backups !!

Unfortunately, I can't get into the recovery console. It hangs after selecting which windows installation (there is only one) to recover. I'll be picking up a new HD at Best Buy tomorrow to replace this sucker and then seeing what I can salvage off the original.

I don't think I've seen it mentioned in the Lounge, but you might like to try DIY DataRecovery DiskPatch. It gives you a chance to see if it will work, and only if it appears that it will do you need to purchase.

I put in a new HD today; reinstalled XP; downloaded all the necessary drivers from Gateway and installed them; and added service pack 2. My brother swears that his girlfriend doesn't care what is on the old HD so I'm just going to let it drop - I am curious to see what can be salvaged but not THAT curious.
BTW, I got a Seagate Barrucada 80GB for $39.99 at Best Buy after a $50 rebate.
